Resident ā€¢ 2014

My family and I moved here from Brooklyn, NY and have been living here for a couple of weeks now. Coming from NYC, we had completely different expectations than many people. Our tolerance for high rents, noise, pollution, poor maintenance, rudeness and poor safety is pretty high - probably as high as it can possibly be! However, even taking that into consideration, Tamarlane is really fantastic and we couldn't be happier overall. The move-in experience was great. The staff at Tamarlane is very friendly, professional, and courteous and made the process of finding and securing an apartment absolutely painless and easy. They communicated clearly what they needed from us and were up-front about all costs and policies. I had reservations about living in a complex based on things that I had learned about apartment complexes in the military. However, so far, living here has been great. The apartment we rented is a two bedroom single level unit. When we arrived, it was cleaned, freshly painted, repaired, and prepped for our arrival. There was even a nice welcome "note 'n' tote" waiting for us, along with the keys. The apartment and the whole complex is very quiet, especially by Brooklyn standards! All we can hear are the sounds of nature. There's the occasional noise issue - a plane or helicopter passing overhead, a siren moving down Canco, or a party at a nearby house (not in the complex) - but honestly, these are super rare and we're so tucked away that we're pretty well insulated from them. To put things into perspective, it beats sirens, loud music, trains rumbling by, engines, and gunshots - all complementary with a typical Brooklyn apartment - at all hours of the day and night by a long shot! We also never hear a peep from any of our neighbors. I'm not sure whether the units are sound-proofed or they use spray-on insulation or what, but inside the apartment is absolutely silent. The grounds are well-kept. A few times, I've seen dog feces (both bagged and in the open) around the grounds and once, I saw some litter (which I threw away) but again, just for some perspective, it's immaculate by Brooklyn standards. The management team also does a great job keeping the grounds. I've seen a landscaping crew twice already (I'm thinking they come by weekly) and the on-call maintenance man is a great guy and very helpful. I haven't needed to ask for anything to be repaired because everything works great in our apartment. Again (hate to harp, but it's important), by NYC standards, I'm just happy I don't have to fix anything myself! The location is perfect. The neighborhood of Back Cove is a really nice one. We're minutes (driving) from shopping, school, trails, and entertainment. It's very convenient. There are two or three different "strips" of shops, restaurants, etc., depending on which direction we go. Not a matter of just walking around the corner to the nearest bodega or deli, but still pretty good. We don't miss the 45-80 minute commutes or train hassles in the least! There are two churches nearby and a couple of office buildings but other than that, the area is mostly residential and there's not a ton of traffic. Traffic here is pretty much non-existent and even in the "rush hour" periods, the traffic still moves along at a pretty good pace. We're not right next to the interstate (a big plus) but it's close enough that we can get onto it in about two minutes. So, as far as work/school commuting and shopping/entertainment, Tamarlane is situated in an ideal spot in relation to the various routes you could take. Access to the complex is by a single entry/exit point, which is a mixed blessing in terms of safety/emergencies. The whole complex is well-lit and everyone - management and tenants - works at creating and maintaining a sense of community that strikes me as a mix between the sense of "our block" back in Brooklyn and a gated community feel. I haven't noticed any private security or police patrols but I haven't been here that long. I did notice a police unit parked in one of the church lots near the complex a couple of times, though. However, the police here look very-well funded and I imagine response times are much lower than New York and to be honest, I haven't seen any sign or indication of any kind of rowdy roughnecks I'm used to anywhere around here so my family and I feel very safe. Everyone here is nice, polite, and friendly and mostly keep to themselves. The rents seem pretty reasonable to us but, yet again, we're used to very high rents in relation to the rest of the country. All the utilities are separate, which was new to us, but reasonably priced. The guy that you need to talk to for cable and internet service is great. We also pay our rent online, which is a nice convenience. There are extra fees for this and that, like a pet fee, for example, but everything together still amounts to less than we would pay for a comparable place in New York, so we're happy with the pricing. I wouldn't say that the apartments are necessarily "luxury" by NY standards but compared to some others I've viewed in this area, they are very, very nice. A couple of times, I was shown some apartments in the area for similar rent that looked like they should have been condemned. So yeah, the units here are quite nice and we're happy with the overall value that we're getting dollar for dollar. One thing that threw us for a loop was the set of policies around what you can and cannot do in your apartment. In New York, most of the time, you can basically do whatever you want as long as you put everything back the way it was when you leave or pay someone else to do so but apparently here, there are a lot of rules about what you're allowed to do as far as hanging pictures, curtains, gardening, and so on. So, be sure to ask about those rules before you sign, especially if you're not from here or are new to these kinds of complexes. The staff are very up front about them, so it's not a problem, just something to be aware of. Tamarlane is absolutely a quiet, clean, and safe place to live. It's managed by professional, friendly people and the people who live here are courteous, too. The sense of community they foster is an added bonus and the location within Portland and in relation to everything in the area is perfect.
