Resident 2014

9/5/2014

I've read many bad reviews about the incompetency of the management team prior to move-in, but at that time, Island Drive is the only place with available studios I needed, plus many UM medical students live here, and I felt like it's a safe community. For these reasons, I tried to not regret my decision. .........Until they forgot I was moving in on my move-in date. The person responsible for all of my email correspondences was Anita. She wasn't even in the office that day. The person who told me what my new address was a week prior was Autumn. I had my U-Haul parked in front of the leasing office not knowing where to go for the longest time, while the manager Marion (or Mara?) had people vacuum the apartment and a person called Danielle flew through my paper work. I was eventually able to move in on the scheduled day, but she gave me the wrong set of keys, so that evening, I spent one hour sitting in the hallway waiting for the emergency maintenance to unlock me. Not to mention that many drawers were broke, the mirror cabinet still had other people's stuff in it, and now that I've lived here for a month, the bathtub and sink are still not fixed. As of last week, when I called again, Marion/Mara told me the "re-glazeing" of the bathtub and sink will not be scheduled until after October. One thing you should know is Island drive's buildings are very old. After moving in, my kitchen light broke and hot water went out. And since the management team is so unprofessional, every maintenance issue becomes a big headache. For example, I've called maintenance three times in the past two weeks, but they can never get my kitchen light to turn on. I have been waiting for someone to come look at the hot water since yesterday, but I'm still waiting; I tried calling again this morning, but was constantly put on hold by Danielle. An unexpected down side is the noise of the apartment. I am not a person that minds neighbors' talking or music too much, but the fridge! The fridge Island Drive has for me is extremely loud compared with the ones I've seen of the studios at Huron Tower. So I started wearing ear plugs (I have the CVS brand that claims to reduce 32 dbs); the fridge noise is bearable now when I go to sleep, but then I was woken up by the kitchen pipe draining sound the other day. The walls are paper thin too. I can hear people whisper in the hallway, I can hear the laundry room activities, I can hear my neighbors' drawers opening and closing. My upstairs neighbor seems to have a rocking chair of some sort, and often when I'm on the phone and the chair is rocking, I need to really speak up to overcome the noise. Don't live here. Just don't, if you have better choices.
