Resident 2009 - 2010

3/5/2011

Meadowbrook Village was my one and only experience with McKinley. It was the worst renting experience I've ever had. First, our toilet overflowed for no reason. Then the stove broke. These problems were easily and promptly taken care of by maintenance. Then, during the winter, I woke up and our furnace had broken and the apartment was about 58 degrees and falling. (Insulation is terrible, heating bill was upwards of $250 every month in the winter.) The maintenance man took a long time to get there but fixed it quickly....until it broke again about 2 days later. Again, a quick fix and it was working again. Broken again the next day. This time the maintenance man finally figured out there was something seriously wrong with it, while keeping the front door open and tracking mud through the house. Because it was a weekend and the maintenance guy needed a new part to fix the furnace, we were without heat in JANUARY for four days. They gave us a couple of space heaters and one of them was broken. This could have been avoided if they had just fixed it properly the first time instead of trying to cut corners. We asked for a rent credit for the time we were without heat and they refused to give us one, saying "McKinley doesn't do rent credits." I found out from my hair stylist about a year later that she lives at a McKinley property and received a rent credit for a similar issue. Throughout this ordeal the maintenance man was very rude, and I filed a complaint about him with the office. The upstairs neighbors were easily heard walking around early in the morning and slamming the outside door (you couldn't close it quietly because the frame is warped and requires a firm slamming). I could hear the adjacent neighbor's telephone ringing through the wall. I addressed the management about the noise and they said they would "take care of it." "Taking care of it" would have been re-sound-proofing the apartments so the walls aren't paper-thin. Needless to say, nothing changed about the noise problems. How can you tell people to stop walking around or stop getting phone calls? Also, there was a break-in in the short time I lived there (August 2009-February 2010). The free wifi barely ever worked properly and when I tried calling the office about it they told me I had to call the company myself. The office staff almost never answered their phones, and the new property manager (as of February 2010) was cold as ice. The master bedroom's shower pressure quit working in the winter. The apartment was big and had a washer and dryer, but that was the only good thing about it. We got a good deal on the apartment since it was on special, but you'd be getting robbed if you were renting it at the purported market price. Oh, and I did like that the foyer had a slate/tile floor and has a slight hallway before opening up to the living room.
