Resident 2007 - 2009

Mixed feelings, you decide what matters to you.

I lived here for almost 2 years, and didn't mind my stay too bad. I loved my apartment because of all of the space I had to myself, and the washer/dryer in the apartment (I now live near Boston, MA and that's pretty much not an option here). When I looked at the apartment initially, the washer/dryer was a must for me. So when I visited, I was told that was included in the rent, and was never told that my rent could increase because of it. I decided to make it my home. When I went to sign my lease on move-in day, I noticed that after 5 months, my rent would increase by $35/month because of the washer/dryer, and that it was only free for the 1st 6 months. I was NOT informed of that, and I pay attention to every little detail that businesses tell me, because I've worked in customer service, and know to make sure I'm not getting ripped off. I told the girl that was going over my lease papers with me that it was not discussed with me that my rent would increase because of the washer/dryer. I just sucked it up and dealt with it. Just make sure you get ALL of the details before signing your lease. Rent did increase by $10/mth for me after the 1st 11 months was up (you have to sign an 11 mth lease the 1st time around.) I lived in the 1-bedroom by myself, and was never too concerned about my safety, but I have watched enough Lifetime movies to always be aware. I did have a friend/neighbor that had issues with people looking into her bedroom window at night, so that did scare me quite a bit. The upstairs neighbors was a college-age boyfriend and girlfriend, and they were nice, but quite noisy even in the late hours of the night. I don't know if they didn't realize that the floors were paper-thin, or if they were really just stomping around like elephants. I did have one concern I addressed with the mgmt team about someone talking on their cellphone in the breezeway in front of my door when I was coming home later in the evening, and I did complain about that. Mgmnt addressed it pretty quickly. They were also decently helpful when I ran into a couple of different issues getting rent in due to paycheck issues, or bank issues. I think it's all about how you approach them, you'll get the response you want. Make sure you are polite, yet forceful and professional sounding, like you know your stuff, and you'll be able to get done what you want. My water heater leaked on 3 different occassions, and finally on the 3rd, they replaced it. My bathroom ceiling leaked also on 3 or 4 different occasions, and finally on the last time maintenance figured out what the problem was. They are really nice, and there's always 1 on call over-night, which I did have to use with the water heater problem and they got to my place pretty quick late at night. They just didn't seem to be overly knowledgeable about what they needed to do, as it took multiple visits for anything to get fixed. The light outside my entrance wasn't working for quite some time before they fixed it, which is definitely a safety issue. I would reccommend not living in the 2/3 bedroom apartments, because whenever I would have to go to the leasing office, kids were running around like dogs off their leashes, and I had heard from a few people that that part of the complex is very noisy. I had great neighbors in my 1-bedroom at the side of the park near the Sashabaw entrance. Either of the 1st 2 bldgs have really great people in there. After I moved out, I got my deposit refund statement telling me what was going to cost me money from my deposit, and they did try and run 1 thing past me. A tenant before me must have put a shelf in the cabinet below my bathroom sink, and of course I'm not going to know if that is standard or not when I fill out my move-in survey, but they tried charging me for that. I addressed it with them right away, and they didn't end up charging me for it afterall. Just make sure when the leasing agent comes with you to the apartment, she/he goes thru the apartment with you, and you ask that everything in the apartment (or not in) is standard. Don't let them leave the apartment until you are DONE with the move-in check-in. Overall, it wasn't bad for the price, and if I were to move back to the area and needed an apartment, I would consider going back if I were in the same income bracket. But you get what you pay for, and since it's inexpensive in a nice area, you're going to run into SOME issues irregardless.
