Resident 2016

11/16/2016

The problems have not stopped since day one. The day prior to my move in this past June, I received an e-mail from building management requesting the move in be postponed. This was not possible as I had nowhere else to go and moving assistance already scheduled so I moved in to a unit that was not yet painted, still needed a new front door, and had a number of others issues such as missing door handles, an inoperable shower, etc. Some of this way fixed on the first business day following move in, but this was after I had to deal with a "missing" 24/7 concierge who couldn't lock down the elevators for my move in or open the loading dock doors. The rest of the issues such as my front door took almost two months to be resolved. To this day, I still do not have an inoperable buzzer and it's been five months -- granted, building management probably could have at some point indicated I needed to provide my own phone for the buzzer to operate as well. Even when I plugged in this phone though, the buzzer does not work and management has made no efforts to fix this. When my front door was finally replaced, I was on an extended international trip out of the country. I had family check in on my apartment while I was gone only to learn that my front door did not stay shut unless locked after the replacement was installed. When I finally returned from the trip, I also noticed that the locking mechanism on the new door is completely different. While the door takes the same key, it only has one lock and is much less secure than the two locks on my previous door. When I brought this to the attention of management, they indicated they'd look into alternative options and I never heard back from them. We've had continued problems with the elevators being dirty, smelling and generally seeming to operate of their own free will (going down when it says up and vice versa). My apartment continuously smells like smoke due to others in the building yet the building claims they've reported the marijuana smoker on my floor to the cops. I'm not the only resident to have witnessed plenty of roaches throughout the building as well as other bugs. Considering my balcony screen was slashed (on a high floor) when I moved in, I again shouldn't be surprised. However, the building staff seems unconcerned by these things and makes no efforts to fix this. When I request spraying for roaches, they've indicated this is done every Wednesday but it clearly doesn't seem to help -- they've yet to further work to fix this. For over two weeks, there was a hole in my bathroom ceiling after a leak occurred. The maintenance staff had no idea how to fix the problem and they had to call in two different outside teams to examine the issue. I had to continue to push the main office to have this problem fixed despite the fact that the building had a major leak... seems like this would have been a priority, but no. Eventually the leak was fixed, but my ceiling was repaired rather haphazardly and it's still clear exactly where the hole was. I spent hours trying to get the resulting grime off my bathroom mirror as well -- two weeks of water build up does not mesh well with mirrored surfaces. Whenever I bring something to the attention of the building manager (Paige, as commented on other reviews) after maintenance doesn't occur, he claims he didn't know. It's clear that none of the staff communicate with each other but it certainly seems like the manager should be aware of major maintenance requests such as leaking air conditioners and ceilings, faulty doors, roaches, etc. It's particularly alarming to me how terribly this apartment complex is ran when I'm almost positive that rent will go up should I decide to stay... nothing gets taken care of, especially not in a timely fashion. The car next to mine had a window smashed in last night in our "gated" parking manned by 24/7 concierge... I doubt management will do anything about that either. My recommendation if you're looking for a new place in Detroit? Look elsewhere. Don't be fooled by the "reasonable" prices or amenities that don't really exist. I've been to many Village Green properties and this is the worst by far.
