I'm moving out of Hillcrest Village in less than a month after a two-year lease, and I'm going to miss everything about it. It's beautiful, cozy, and quiet. If you're an MSU or LCC student, thirty-minute walk to campus, 10-minute bike ride, tons of parking. It's CRAZY cheap too if you can sign a lease when they have specials.
The only drawbacks are purely convenience-related. The washer/dryer unit is in the middle of the complex, and they aren't the greatest machines in the world, but there's a huge laundry line outside. There's no garbage disposal or dishwasher in mine, but the newer (and probably more expensive ones) have them. No cable or Internet, but if you get a router and a service and split it with tenants in the same building, it's SUPER cheap (I paid less than $10/month for wireless).
The maintenance staff is phenomenal -- nicest human beings ever -- and the leasing staff take noise complaints very seriously (so if you're into partying our loud music, it's obviously not for you). The landlord is a -----, but you only have to see her like once every five months; otherwise, they're lenient on rent due dates (about a five-day grace period) and they let me paint my walls (I still have to paint them back...). It's also within walking distance (a quarter mile) to Frandor Plaza, a huge shopping plaza with a grocery store, bar, World Market, Panera Bread...ugh, it's just so wonderful. I'm sad I have to leave.
Seriously, if you like quiet places, beautiful architecture (they're the oldest apartments in East Lansing), and cheap rent (no deposit!) for decently sized digs, live here!
