Resident 2007 - 2008

1/12/2009

The good points of Spartan Village were that rent was all rolled into one package, and we were able to pay it online. That's about it. The bad points? We had the misfortune of having one of the older apartments that have recently been demolished, so I can't say much for the ones that still exist. I do know, however, that they are charging about $700 a month for the newer ones, which just makes then even less worth it. Let's start with the water. It's disgusting. The pipes are old, and East Lansing doesn't bother to do much to treat their water. So if you enjoy a lot of minerals and smelling like skunk after every shower, maybe you'd like it. Sulfur scented hair gets old really fast though. The roaches never went away, no matter what the bug specialists did. There weren't many, but it was still disgusting. Our apartment was right next to the railroad tracks, so you could learn to tell the time of day by when the trains would go by. In the winter, they didn't believe in snow removal. The sidewalks and parking lots were always icy and snow. I got my car stuck a few times because they would make a half assed effort to plow, and then just leave random piles blocking parking spots or entrances. If you have a lot of stuff, don't move in. The places are TINY. We're talking 350 sq. ft. tiny. There are only 2 closets, so unless you are magically able to shrink all of your stuff, don't plan on moving in more than a few things. The fridge and stove are "apartment sized", and there is no cupboard space to be had. The building and the apartment seemed to be cracking in half. Doors on opposite sides of the room would close by themselves, in opposite direction. It ALWAYS smelled like gas or garbage or something in there, but mostly gas because of the stoves. They claimed it was because they had standing pilots, but it was bad enough to make people sick every once in a while. It's about as far off of campus as you can get while technically still being "on campus", and while there are buses, it's not easy to get on campus if you need to. Long story short - don't do it.
