Resident 2011 - 2012

1/2/2013

I looked at several prospective apartments when I moved to Kalamazoo and while one was in a newer complex that seemed well-managed, I opted for Pinewood Glen and was very happy with my decision. Pros: -Location: It's within a few miles of downtown, within walking distance of a lot of shopping and a movie theater, and a short walk from the bus stop. -Staff: Management was very honest. For example, several fixtures were missing when I viewed the apartment but had been installed as promised by the time I moved in. They were also willing to work with me in terms of the lease length because the job I moved for was a contract position that didn't have a fixed term. They were always very pleasant and knew who I was despite our limited interactions. -Laundry: Stackable machines inside the apartment, but there were also coin-operated (I think) full-size machines in the building. I never ended up using these but it was nice to know they were available -Maintenance: I didn't have any maintenance issues, but when they needed to enter the apartment to check the filter, we got plenty of notice. Also, the sidewalks and lots were cleaned pretty promptly after snow and, in the relatively short time I was there, they painted both the exterior and the interior of the building, both of which were in decent shape to begin with. The apartment was also genuinely in move-in condition - it was cleaner than most of the places I've moved into. -Arboretum: I didn't take advantage of this as much as I wanted to, but I loved it whenever I did. It was relaxing to just sit and watch the wildlife. The trails are well-maintained and I appreciated that someone went to the trouble to post descriptive labels next to the various trees and plants. -Neighbors: Most of the tenants seemed to be professionals so I didn't notice a lot of partying. Cons: The one thing that would keep me from giving Pinewood Glen a 100% rating is that I could sometimes hear my upstairs neighbor walking around. It seems like it's hard to find a place where that isn't an issue, though. I never heard my next door neighbor and my energy bills were reasonable (I was on the ground floor, btw), but every once in a while, I could hear her clomping around and I can't deny that it would get on my nerves. Still, in my experience, it's hard to find a place where that isn't an issue. Anyway, I would still be living there if my job hadn't wound down.
