Resident ā€¢ 2010 - 2013

8/21/2013

Don't make the mistake of moving to this complex. tl;dr: The apartments are decent, the maintenance staff is responsive, but the office staff is unhelpful, rude, condescending, and apathetic. The national company the complex is owned by is a bureaucratic mess. You'll be fine living here until you have a problem; then you're out of luck. I started out expecting good things. The apartment was in good condition, and even though it was by the highway the noise wasn't too bad. It was fine until early 2012, when I had my first issue with the complex: they tacked on an extra fee for parking without notification. I went to the office to talk to them about it, and they shrugged off my concern saying "it's our new policy." They did the same thing shortly after, when my water bill increased from $20-25/mo to $40-45/mo, again with no notice or explanation of the price jump. I went to the office, and they said they didn't handle the billing, their billing company did. I called the billing company - they said they get the numbers from the Lansing Board of Water & Light. I called BWL; they said they do nothing with charges for Oak Park. I went back into the office; this time, they claimed they received notice from the billing company, saying the price of water would be increasing by 40% IN ONE MONTH. I asked why Oak Park didn't notify the residents; they did not have an answer. I asked the reason for the hike; they did not have an answer. From there it got worse. I notified them that the lock to the building was broken; I came home to a puddle of WD-40 on the linoleum and a still-broken lock. (The resident below me has an elderly mother that needs assistance walking, so that was a major safety hazard.) It took them 3 weeks to clean that mess and fix the lock. They entered my apartment without notifying me. They repainted the inside of the building - sloppily. The windows have to be 70% opaque before they'll replace them, When I decided to move out, they tried to charge me DOUBLE the early move-out fee, and also charged me $1300 for 900 square feet of contractor grade carpet. When I disputed the charges, it took them 2 MONTHS to respond to their own management company asking for information. What a disaster. I recently drove back through the complex; there's a huge increase of dying pine trees and mountains of mulch to disguise the lack of landscaping. The place is on a downhill slide.
