Resident 2013

6/19/2013

I was shocked to see this was rated at 6% but then I realized it's not the total average of all rankings. I lived here for 3 years and it was the best of any apartments I've rented over the 13 years. I'd still be living here except for my biggest complaint: every year they raised the rent. Eventually it got to the point where it was not affordable for me anymore. Especially when you consider that each year the apartment's fixtures are depreciating and yet I'm supposed to pay MORE for those? Didn't make financial sense to me. Complaint #2 is the staff is a bunch of inflexible bureaucrats. I called one day late about moving out so I had to stay a whole month extra. I couldn't turn in my keys early because I had said over a month earlier I'd move out on the last day of the month, so instead of calling the manager (which apparently is a harrowing experience for them) I had to take an hour off work to come back and turn in the keys. Obviously management needs to empower its employees a little more so they aren't so rigid. The apartment was fine except the kitchen was very poorly designed. Whoever designed the cabinets was an idiot. There was hardly any storage space at all, so if you're a foodie who likes to cook a lot then you're in big trouble. (Of course now I moved to an apartment with a more standard kitchen and have more space than I know what to do with.) The overall apartment construction is basically the same level of shoddiness you get pretty much anywhere. That means yes you can hear your upstairs neighbor cackle every time there's a joke on TV and you can hear her headboard slamming against the wall every time she's having sex (thankfully not too often) and whenever she goes in or out and slams the door it shakes the whole apartment like an earthquake and then sounds like a herd of elephants is going up or down the steps. So if you get a neighbor with a baby or who fights a lot or has one of those annoying high bass stereos then it's going to be annoying for you. Most of your neighbors are going to be A-r-a-b (apparently this system censors that word) or Indian (as in from India) so if you're the Tea Party type then maybe this neighborhood isn't for you. Also, the air conditioner and heater is so powerful it sounds like a wind tunnel, which prompted me to watch most movies with the captioning on. But overall though my apartment was small it had lots of storage space and the washer/dryer was very convenient. Maintenance generally fixed anything promptly. When my air conditioner died they installed a brand new one, not just another old one. The parking garage was nice, at least until someone's boyfriend parked too close to the line of her spot and I accidentally hit a post and smashed my passenger's side mirror. Guest parking is an issue for some locations, especially when someone decides she can't walk the 20 feet from her spot in the parking garage and takes up the only convenient guest parking spot. Maybe I'm not making this sound all that great but from my point of view it was a real improvement. I didn't have packages stolen from off my front step, I didn't have to worry about raccoons in the Dumpster, I didn't have to call the cops on noisy neighbors, and there wasn't anyone murdered in the complex that I know about. So it was definitely a step up. Just too rich for my blood anymore.
