Resident ā€¢ 2014 - 2015

6/2/2015

I have lived at Sky Gate since August 2013. All started well.. the apartment was spacious, our rent was cheap, and we only have to pay for trash and electricity. The hallways look dirty and are poorly lit. A lot of the apartment doors need paint - they look like someone has tried breaking in or kicking them. The doorway to the stairs at the end of the hallway is missing door knobs and also needs a paint job. The ceiling in the hallway always looks like its falling apart. The stairways are also constantly dirty and have an odor to them. I have found cigarette butts, animal feces/pee, and trash in them. Whenever someone comes over, I tell them never to take the stairs. I live in the back building. The management took the knobs off the door and kept us from being able to enter from that side for "safety." As a result, people have broken the door several times and just wedge stuff in so they can get in. This is especially annoying when you get home late (after 9pm) and there is no parking in the front. I'd rather have a lock on the door I can get in then walk around to the front of the building. (Talk about safety). The apartment itself is spacious, kind of. The kitchen is so narrow that the refrigerator door cannot open all the way. There's little cupboard space, and for some reason our apartment did not come up with a closet by the entry as we were told they included. The living space and bedrooms are a decent size. We got an end unit which gave us a much larger master bedroom and a walk in closet. There is plenty of storage space overall. Our ceiling leaks constantly, and badly when it rains. As do our windows. Our ceiling has leaked so much that part of it has actually peeled off. The two times I've called about it leaking I have been told "its not an emergency and we have to wait until the rain stops before we can do anything about it" and then they've done nothing about it. The A/C is just a wall unit that is sticking into the living space itself. It's loud and expensive to run. No AC in any of the bedrooms. The AC only cools the living room and kitchen. We lose hot water regularly, and when you shower the water switches from super hot to super cold quickly and often. There have been times I've had to jump out of the shower super quick because it became scalding and the only way to stop it was to turn the water off completely. In the bathroom, the sink/vanity is very tiny and looks more like a guest bathroom than a functioning bathroom. There is little space to put even soap/toothbrush on it without it falling over. The cabinet over the toilet isn't very deep but is still semi-helpful. Our towel racks have fallen out of the wall and constantly become detached. The entire apartment complex has a weird aroma to it (as a lot of complexes do). Whatever our neighbors are cooking (or smoking) leaks into the hallways. One of our neighbors (not sure which one) also enjoys their weed and that smell leaks into our bedroom several times a week at night time (10pm). Management isn't the nicest. Most times if you call the office, there is no answer and you won't get a call back if you leave a message. You can go down there 5 minutes after you call and they'll be sitting at their desks doing nothing. Then when you actually walk in their you're usually inconveniencing them somehow even if its just to ask a question. Overall, it was a good cheap apartment with some terrible context. We're breaking our lease and moving down the street.
