Resident ā€¢ 2012 - 2013

This review is in the non-pet building. Please note that '----' means 'I-n-d-i-a-n-s'. For some reason this site blocks that word. Pros: -Amazing location. If you pick an apartment in this area you'll be set. Next to Whole Foods, Byerlys, 50th and France, Southdale, Edina Promedade is always a great walk, centennial lakes is a wonderful walk, etc. Perfect location, couldn't ask for a better one. -Decent value. It's more expensive than the beat up apartments near it, but cheaper than ones like York Plaza, York Place, Durham, etc. It's right in the middle to provide a good value. Also has an indoor, outdoor pool and hot tub, tennis court, exercise room, etc. And a lot of the amenities are paid for/included in your rent. -Management was great. Quick to help, always resolved issues, extremely nice, etc. Couldn't have been better. -No bugs or insects in the building. They have people that come and prevent that. I had a couple little water bugs or something in my apartment but they must come through the cracks of the windows. Not a big deal, just kill them. Or put them in a jar and throw them back outside if you don't wanna kill. -Beautiful landscaping - you'll notice it if you tour. -Maintenance was fine - came within a couple hours and fixed any issue(s). Cons: -Water. The water here is hard. You'll notice it when you take a shower - the water will "stick" to you. Whatever, the water is free and it's a big building so it's probably difficult to get soft water. But you can actually feel the difference when you wash your hands or take a shower at a place with soft water. Feels so much better on your hands. Another thing is that at times it can be difficult to get hard water. This is rare, though. You'll have trouble during high demand times, like in the morning when everyone else is taking a shower before work or on Saturday and Sunday afternoons when people are running laundry and taking showers. But it's not an issue if you don't take it during high demand hours. Getting soft water was an issue, it doesn't exist. I guess it's not that big of a deal. Building is like 40 years old so you can't expect it to be perfect. -Sounds. I want to be very careful here. I'm not referring to neighbors playing loud music, people yelling, etc. My neighbors were actually quite quiet and Cedars is actually quiet considering the amount of people in each building. I'm referring to household noise. This building is made of wood, so you can hear everything people do. The most frustrating part for me was hearing people walk. Drove me nuts. Whenever someone walked within about 50 feet of my apartment, I could hear it. You'll notice it if you tour the place. When you walk on the second or third floor you'll see that it's easy to spread noise - especially for loud walkers (ie walk without shoes and really pound with their heels). There doesn't seem to be a cushion under the carpet. It's just carpet and then plywood. At times the noise was so unbearable that I just had to leave the building and go for a walk or something. There's not much that management can do, outside of putting pads or foam under the carpet in the hallways which won't happen. So anytime someone walks, you'll hear. It's quiet when no one walks. Another thing was that I could hear was what my neighbors below me were doing. If you live on the second or third floor and think you won't hear people below you, think again. I could hear it when my neighbors: -ran water -ran their bathroom fan -walked (I think - if it wasn't them it was someone else) -closed cabinets (this was loud. Cedars could at least place little pads on the doors so they aren't so loud when the close) -closed their closet door -ran their microwave Awkwardly enough, I couldn't hear them talk or when their TV was on. Maybe they didn't have a TV. If I was at Cedars for most of the day I would just put in ear plugs or wear headphones. This would block out the noise. But if you wanted to go without headphones or ear plugs you'd have to live with the noise, which sucks. It's probably like this in other apartments as well and it's just something that you give up when you live in an apartment. I'm really sensitive to sounds, so for other people this wouldn't be an issue. Cedars is actually quiet compared to other apartments. But if you're super sensitive, maybe look for a concrete building that blocks noise. It was great at night (around midnight-2AM) because it was really quiet. But around 5-11PM you'll hear people walking when they do. Drove me nuts, though I'm weird like that. Other people are ok with it. -Smells. This is NOT a smell like vomit or anything like that. It's the smell of curry and other spices. This place has a ton of ------- (I'll get into that later) and, as everyone knows, they have strong body odor. Unfortunately, it lingers in the hallways. Even more unfortunately, it seeps into apartments and then your apartment smells like ------- and Indian food. This isn't a huge negative, but it can get super annoying in the winter months when there's less ventilation. I've had to light a candle but even then the smell of curry comes through. Or I'll just use an air freshener. There's not much Cedars can do. A building is going to smell like it's residents and what they cook. If you ever tour the non-pet buildings, you may notice the smell of curry and other Indian spices. Just be aware of this if you're looking into leasing an apartment here. And again, it's most prominent in the winter months when everyone has their windows closed and there are less places for odors to go. I was hesitant to put smells under negatives, but it happens too often for it to be a neutral. It's definitely not a pro. But you'll get smells in every apartment, it just that this apartment building smells like India. Again, not much Cedars can do short of putting air freshers throughout the building. In some hallway blocks they have forced air into the hallways - like a fan. Unfortunately I was not in one these areas where the air moved. If you're cool with smelling curry and other Indian related smells, you'll be fine. It could be worse, like a rotten fish smell. Curry and other spices aren't too bad. Neutral: -This place has a TON of I-n-d-i-a-n-s. Again, I'm speaking in the non-pet buildings. I'd say the Indian population is probably 85-90%. It's not a big deal, unless you're racist. They're quite nice if you talk to them and are pretty quiet as well. They just keep to themselves and their other Indian friends. Some of them speak Hindu and whatever else. A lot of them have families with little kids, and like all kids they can scream, run around, etc. They're out by the park a lot once they get home from school. Sometimes in the winter they go in the management building and run around, jump on chairs, scream, etc. It's not unusual for kids, but I was surprised to see that the parents made essentially no effort to quiet their kids down. Maybe that's not something they do in Indian cultures, I don't know. Cedars did their best to try to keep them quiet. So if you don't like -------, don't live here. They're everywhere. I'm also seeing more and more in the Edina area. My family and friends say that the whole building smells like curry (which is a spice ------- use in their food). I didn't notice it, but my sense of smell isn't great. There were a couple times where it reeked in the hallway. Just a horrible smell. I had to light a candle in my apartment. This was in the winter when you couldn't open your windows. Would I recommend this place? Sure, I guess. As long as the person wouldn't mind what is in the cons section - or as long as they don't mind a bunch of -------. But I'd probably first recommend that they look at houses. You can rent an entire house for about the same monthly price as some of the apartments in this area. Don't pay anymore than $800 a month without first looking at homes for rent. That's my main recommendation. I'm not sure about some of the other reviews on here that say "I've lived here for 10 years". Why would you live in ANY rental for 10 years? Might as well just buy a house. A benefit of apartments is that you can move whenever and not be held down or liable for a mortgage. The review below me, on 4/10, is actually pretty accurate. I wouldn't agree with number 2 - I'm not sure where there is old paint or chipped concrete. And the parking garage in my building was in fine shape. There are other buildings that I wasn't in, however. The laundry rooms are usually available with the exception of weekends at noon. If you have any questions, put them in the comments and I'll answer them.
