Resident 2018 - 2020

1/31/2020

Highland has new management this year and we lived here the past year before this change and would have given it a better review. Here is what has been going on since the change. I have had the kind of neighbors who blare their music, yell with crude language, bang loudly, maybe roughhousing, maybe fighting, they know I have a six year old kid. I tried telling them hey, we have a kid, also it's hurting all our sleep especially my kids on school nights, the guy said 'that's our problem for raising a kid in cheap apartments', and that's the last I ever tried to work things out with them, I called security for months, I notified managers, I brought in a doctors note from the pediatrician about how it was affecting and scaring my child and how she wasn't sleeping with the doctor emphasizing the importance on sleep for a child's development, I brought in recordings of these incidents. I don't want you guys thinking I'm some prude who has never said a bad word but I'm a mom and I don't need my kid hearing loud men saying the C word for -----, or dropping eff bombs left and right. Management then has no record of my many many phone calls to security and tells me I didn't follow proper channels yet we did and I'm working on getting my phone records now. Management doesn't want to deal with it and offered only the solution of letting us out of our lease early. So in other words they just don't want to deal with it, they took over six months of this to notify us of that option too and let's face it that's a costly option for us, a family of three has a lot of stuff to move, some of it requiring movers that we already paid for for this move, and then hoping we can find another place close enough to campus in our price range. Long story short if you move here they will not enforce the quiet hours like it says in the handbook and if your neighbors harass you they will just tell YOU to move, and they have no empathy for moms going to school, they aren't mom friendly. From the beginning of having this unit: Our unit had a ton of problems that weren't fixed before we moved in and a lot of cosmetic issues that it still has (some odd stain on the kitchen ceiling, bad paint job, holes in wall, strange fixtures hooked to the ceiling from the last tenants, scuffed and cracked flooring, etc.) A past good manager (but of a different department) came by and said, "why did you accept this unit in this condition." We didn't know we had a choice, the leasing manager (another different past manager) at the time acted like there were only so many available. But being entirely too nice as we were and having already moved all our furniture, we made due. After all these managers had always been so kind and helpful that we just didn't want to be the type to complain. And then a few months later all the other stuff mentioned above unfurled, they got new managers, and then not only were we in this subpar apartment but had no "quiet enjoyment"of it either, and we had no choice but to become "complainers" when my whole life I've usually been told I'm too nice.
