Resident 2007 - 2008

5/28/2009

Ideally, Oak Grove Towers could be an excellent place to live. It's in the middle of downtown Minneapolis, it's a nice enough building, and the apartments are very affordable. Those are the last nice things I'm going to say about the place. There are three major problems with Oak Grove Towers: the management, the management, and the management. Let me explain. After living there for about 6 months, I had learned to deal with some of the glaring flaws of my new residence. Sure it took over 3 hours to get a load of laundry done because the machines were constantly out of order or stopping mid-cycle (not to mention on an asinine card system). But hey, at least I didn't have to go to a laundromat. Sure the parking was an utter joke. We paid $75/month for one "secure, enclosed" parking spot that turned out to be on the roof of the connecting ramp, and I had heard a bunch of grumblings about things being stolen out of cars. But at least I had a place to park, because there were NEVER any spots within 3 blocks of the place if anyone visited me. (There are 6 spots for visitor parking at Oak Grove Towers. There are twenty FLOORS worth of residents. Do the math.) Here's where it got bad. While returning home later on one night, I saw someone EASILY get in the front doors using a credit card. I called the office the next day letting them know about the security breach and the manager basically said I was lying and their lock was fine. Of course, about 2 months later, my apartment was robbed. When the police arrived later to take my report, someone from the floor below me greeted the same officers at the front door--turns out they were robbed the same night and the thieves stole the same sort of things. Here's the best part--when I reported the robbery to management, the guy basically told me it was my fault! Obviously I didn't take kindly to this and berated the king of incompetence fairly well. I asked to see the "surveillance tapes" of that evening myself (it only could have happened in a 4 hour window) and the manager refused, assuring me he'd look at them himself. Sounds just a bit suspicious doesn't it? After our verbal sparring session following the robbery, apparently the manager had had enough of us living there. Before this big mess, we got a noise warning, which we earned--we were being noisy after the bar. We apologized and moved on. But about a week after the robbery, I found a note slid under the door that said we had received a second complaint, and the third would mean we were evicted. However, I'd have to argue that it's fairly tough to cause a lot of noise when you weren't there, which neither of us were. I went down and contested the complaint, but I was told "whoever reported you has been living here for 7 years and I trust them more than I trust you". Well then. About two months before I ultimately left, my roommate took a job in Europe so he was obviously moving out. I found another roommate, got everything switched over on the lease and approved, and my new roommate moved in that December. Just THREE DAYS after the new guy moved in, boom, there's another letter about noise, and how we needed to be out by the end of the month. But once again, it's hard to make noise when you aren't there! I stormed into the office explaining how ridiculous it was to let someone new move in if they had just planned to kick us out all along, especially when we were one month away from renewing the lease. The manager's response: "Oh I wasn't going to renew your lease next month anyway. You had already caused way too many problems before this." Well, um, then WHY DID YOU OK SOMEONE ELSE MOVING IN WITH ME THREE DAYS EARLIER?! Another classic response: "Well you never asked, I thought you both were aware this was only for another month." Rather than fight the eviction, I got the hell out of there and moved before I committed a crime of my own. Sorry about the lengthy story, but now you're forewarned: do NOT rent from here.
