Resident 2013 - 2015

4/2/2015

Noise: I've lived in apartments and townhouses for my entire life (granted, I'm in my late twenties) and have never experienced this degree of constant noise from other neighbors. Some of this is to be expected, considering the kid-friendly goal of the cooperative. Suffice to say I have at times reconsidered having children in the future due to the incessant tantrums and occasional screaming parents. Surely, they can't all be like this? Regardless, seemingly 100% of my neighbors have young children, and the sounds coming from the walls and floor were relentless. At the top of the stairs and within the bathroom in my unit, you can sometimes hear entire conversations between the neighbors with whom I share a wall. It's also readily apparent every time they go up or down the stairs. I can hear when the people who share my bedroom wall close a dresser or a closet. Hallway noise is particularly bad. Thus, I have given a score of 1 out of 5 stars for the "Noise" category. Grounds: The landscaping and upkeep are wonderful. The grounds are quite spacious, with plenty of room for recreation. 5/5 Safety: Walkways are well-lit. Shrubs are trimmed. I must note, however, that my bicycle wheels were stolen off of my bicycle, which was chained outside my front door. In addition to costing me $200, this was somewhat unsettling. There was also a car theft from our parking lot recently. 3/5 Neighborhood: The location is excellent regarding entertainment and public transit. Downtown Minneapolis is just a few miles away, yet far enough that congestion is never an issue. There are plenty of good restaurants around - Eli's East is a favorite, and Sporty's and Mannings are low-key bars just down the street. There are two bus lines within two blocks of my unit. Roseville is just a few miles away, where there's a mall and movie theater. St. Paul is also close enough that you can drive there on a whim. Proximity to the university was my primary reason for living here. 5/5 Maintenance: -Water outages (with at least 24 hours notice) were a regular occurrence. -The light bulbs are a unique fluorescent kind which the maintenance people usually change for you upon request, although there were two times that the maintenance folks told me to pick up a light bulb from the office myself, which was inconvenient because it is only open while I'm working at the university. -The washing machines frequently caused problems. During the winter, it was not uncommon for two out of four washers to be out of service. Once, three were down simultaneously. Currently, one or two of the washers leak moderate amounts of water onto the floor after each use. The dryers frequently did not adequately dry clothing, even after two cycles (I have worked as an appliance repairman and am well-versed with the operation of these devices). Most of this equipment could probably use replacing. Additionally, my laundry detergent and dryer sheets were recently stolen from the community storage area. -You'll probably want an air conditioner for July-August, which was a problem for me because my bedroom lacks an AC box. -Lastly, because I don't know where else to put this: the kitchen sink is far too small. If you cook anything requiring a moderate amount of dishes, you will need to wash them immediately just to make room for the rest of the dishes. Lack of a dishwasher exacerbates this problem. 3/5 Staff: I had extremely minimal interaction with staff, but they were always pleasant. 5/5 Overall: 3.6/5 stars. I would absolutely recommend this place to anybody with children under the age of 8. For childless graduate students, I suggest seeing a unit during the day while children are active to get a gauge on the noise. For the amount of space you're getting, this is a good deal.
