Resident 2006 - 2009

1/29/2009

I have stayed in the Creamette Lofts for the past 3 years for one reason: I hate moving. In that time, I've become all-to-aware of the fact that in my rush to move out of my parent's house, I moved into a lemon. Why? The short answer is two things, poor-quality construction and poor staffing. If you'd like a more detailed review: Off-street parking is available. However, there have been multiple break-ins in the lot while I ve been here. Also, the snow removal system is TERRIBLE. Building management distributes the snow removal policy in the late fall and then proceeds to ignore it and instead plow whenever the spirit moves them (one time in the middle of a major blizzard). Management will generally post a sign the day before they intend to plow, but don't be surprised if the designated day/time comes and goes without the lot being plowed. If you're a busybody or nosy neighbor you'll love this place. Doors, walls and ceilings are paper thin. If your upstairs neighbor moves a chair, you'll hear it. If they're wearing heels, you'll hear that too. When your next-door neighbor has a hot date, you ll be privy to whatever mid-orgasmic utterances happen to come out of their mouths. On the plus side, the building gives you an opportunity to listen to new music based on whatever the guy down the hall is listening to that week. Street noise is also a major factor. The windows are poor quality and not only will you hear every car that drives past, but also every drunk chick on her way home to the suburbs after leaving the bar down the street at 2 am crying to her boyfriend because she can't find the car (true story). Finally, if you have a few friends over, realize that the other end of the building WILL hear you courtesy of the doors the cheapskate developer chose. Tip: The entry buzzer system is hooked up to your phone line. People will occasionally call you after bar close trying to get into the building. Put your cellphone on mute before you go to bed. In addition, the condo development across the street plows during the middle of the night. Plan on wearing earplugs to bed when it's snowing or you WILL wake up sometime between midnight and 5 am to the sound of a snowblower. Noise complaints to the city have been ineffective. The grounds are lackluster. I've fallen down the front steps multiple times in the winter due to practically non-existent ice removal. Also, watch the front steps on Sundays and Monday mornings because there tends to be broken glass left from the weekends. As to safety, there have been multiple car break-ins in the parking lot during the time I've been here. Streetlights are sparse on this side of the street. Also, the exterior door in one of the stairwells doesn't latch when it snows for some reason. Management hasn't responded to my requests for it to be repaired. Construction quality is poor. Shelves aren't anchored into studs. There are inadequate supports for closet shelves. Heat regulation is a major issue. Appliances are of very low quality. Maintenance: Plan on repairs being slow and that it will need to be redone. I've had maintenance up 4 times to fix my leaky toilet and the thing STILL runs. Air conditioning units are not maintained adequately. My front closet was flooded last spring after maintenance neglected to clean the AC filter. Trash bins are overflowing and the recycling is inconveniently located. It's also not unheard of to find vomit and/or urine in the elevators or stairwells. With all of these complaints, by far my biggest issue has been with management. Office hours are odd and treated more as an ideal than an actual schedule. In case you haven't figured out, I'm finally moving out of this place so it's time for management to rerent my apartment to another poor sap. In the past week I've had the building manager tell me the wrong day that they're showing my apartment and then walk into my apartment while I was still in bed. He's now showed up at my door with a total stranger either at the wrong time or with virtually no notice 3 times in the last week. Each time he s acted like it was my problem and as though I m interfering with his ability to find a new tenant by asking for the reasonable notice that s required by state law. Landlord, if you're reading this: telling me that you're showing my apartment on Friday at 12 and 2 doesn't give you the right to show up on Saturday at 1 and 3. Telling me you're going to show my apartment on Thursday at 5 and 6:15 doesn't give you the right to waltz in at 7. For the next month, this is still my home and I expect to be treated with the respect and privacy that accompanies this fact, despite your desire to find a new tenent asap. My advice to prospective tenants is to find a different apartment complex or just stay at home with your parents... this place may have a great location and look nice, but it isn't worth the hassle.
