Resident 1999 - 2003

9/25/2005

I lived here for many years and was absolutely stunned when I saw the photos on Rent.com. First of all, the apartments are far from modern, have old appliances, are RARELY painted and have crap carpeting. They are supposed to - by law - paint the apartments before a new tenant moves in. They did no such thing for me. The walls were yellowed and the paint was chipping in many areas. You could see where they attempted to patch holes, etc. Howeverm when I did move in they did clean the place and clean the carpet - which hadn't been replaced in years.

The Rent.com photos show nice crisp white walls, nice window shades, updated appliances, track lighting, and a ceiling fan. Well, they must have one apartment all made up because none of the apartments - including the one I had there - looked ANYTHING like this. My apartment had old torn window shades, a fridge from 1950, no ceiling fan, stained and worn carpet, and some lighting fixtures with just a light bulb and no cover.

It's an old building from the 50's that's falling apart. The heating system is an old furnace that works by pumping hot water through the registers in the apartments. Well, when it gets cold out - be prepared. Many times the furnace would be broken for days. And because it's the ORIGINAL furnace from the 50's - it can barely keep up with the deman of the building - not to mention MN winters. We were told to get space heaters if it got too cold in our apartments and NOT to complain unless it was below 60 degrees in our apartments.

Another nusiance is that each apartment can only handle about 14amps - meaning if you run your microwave while your air conditioner is on - it blows a fuse. Even if you just are ironing and watching TV a fuse will blow. And be prepared to live without electricity if you happen to blow a fuse in the evening. The landlords and manager don't like to be bothered - and i fyou DO bother them they get upset like you blew out the fuse on purpose. My advice is to buy some spare fuses yourself and learn to change them yourself so you don't have to bother them.

Then there's the smell - the place smells like natural gas and dead people. I had to suff a towel under my door so the odor wouldn't come in my apartment.

The mailboxes are VERY small - and even though the staff delivers any packages you may get in the mail - sometimes they sit in the office for days or weeks - whenever they get around to delivering them. So check the office daily for packages.

The neighborhood is very bad and unsafe. I was consistently harassed when going to or coming from my car to the apt. building by african americans begging for money. I'd suggest getting a parking spot in the underground garage then having to park on the street. There's barely any space and cars are broken into regularly. Plus, if there's a snow emergency - you're screwed.

ON the plus side - the apartments are literally sound-proof because of the concrete/clay construction of the building. You will never hear anyone above, below or next to you. It's deceiving because if you walk through the halls you can hear music blaring and people talking - but once you're in your apartment it's VERY quiet.
