While reading the lease agreement, rule regulations, and various addendums with the leasing agent, it struck me as odd that there had been an addendum solely on pest control. This addendum stated, amon other things, that failure to immediately report pest concerns would result in a $150 charge. I was very concerned about this and asked the leasing agent if the reason they had this addendum was because of current or prior pest issues. The leasing agent assured me that it was protocol, and that this specific apartment complex has never had any pest issues. The leasing agent went on assuring me that it has never been a problem and said it's just a standard form for all their properties because if ever a pest issue, the property management would want to put an end to it right away.
So, assured that there were no pest issues, I signed all papers and soon moved in. Probably a couple of weeks after moving in, my niece had been telling me that she's been seeing bugs, but whenever she took me to the spot there was none.
Three weeks of living in the apattment, exterminators came to spray for pests "as a preventative measure," which was stated in the notice letter. That Friday, as I lay in the dark, there appeared a bug crawling up the wall. I quickly turned on the lights and captured a picture of the bug, before getting rid of it. I searched Google to see what type of bug it was, and it matched the description of a roach. The next morning, while sweeping my kitchen floor and I moved a dresser that was temporarily set in there and out came another roach. I was petrified and immediately called maintenance and left a message asking to have an exterminator come to my apartment.
I am very upset that I was lied to, I feel that the leasing agent knew that there was an infestation problem. I am currently looking for a new apartment and will be moving as soon as possible!
