Resident 2017 - 2019

4/18/2019

I have lived in Sydney hall in the same apartment for the past two years. I live in one of their four-person, two-bedroom units. Last year, I absolutely loved my experience with Sydney hall, maintenance was quick and effective, the desk workers were knowledgeable and helpful, and the building management was eager to provide the amenities which were discussed in the lease. Over the summer, the building was bought by a new company and I have been absolutely horrified with the results. At the beginning of the year we were having some troubles with the dishwasher failing to drain and backing up onto the floor and into the sink. We called maintenance and they told us that the dishwasher was defective and they would order a new one. It has been at least 9 months and we still have the same dishwasher that were too scared to run because of how frequently it backs up. Right before Thanksgiving break, the unit above us had their dishwasher overflow into their sink (if you're thinking about running your dishwasher at Sydney, know the very real risks), and there was an inch of water on their floor. Emergency maintenance told me that there was nothing they could do, even as the water shorted out our lighting by going through the ceiling. WITHOUT ANY NOTIFICATION (email, call, text, otherwise), maintenance tore out our ceiling down to the studs and installed a space heater to dry out the boards. When I returned to the apartment, a neighbor informed me that the heater had been on for at least 3 days, and the apartment was a balmy 105 F when I walked in the door. It took 2 weeks to get the new ceiling in and painted, and the painters damaged our couch with a large paint spill. We were promised reimbursement of our electricity bill as a result of the space heater, but it took 6 trips over the course of 3 months to the leasing office by my roommates and I until we were reimbursed. Last week, my two roommates in the other bedroom discovered that their shower drain had backed up into their bedroom and were told at 4pm the next day that they needed to be moved out by the next morning so the maintenance could come in and repair the damage. Management offered to reimburse for a hotel for my two roommates who were forced to move out, but they couldn't afford to pay the money down initially for the hotel. On Tuesday the carpet was torn out and a space heater was put in to dry out the floor, but no one has been working on the situation since then as far as I know. This morning I woke up to an apartment that was easily 90 F only to find that the power had been shut off to all our lights in the living room and kitchen, including the router and TV. I have been told to email someone who cannot be reached by phone to inquire about the lights, because the situation is unsafe. My roommates are sleeping on couches and based on the progress made since Sunday (when the flooding incident occurred) I estimate they won't be able to move back in for at least two weeks. I understand that this might not be the impression that most people have at Sydney hall, but everyone needs to know what they're getting into in case incidents like this occur. Before I finish this review (finally), I would like to mention the fact that our cheap cable television (which was an amenity listed in the lease) was cancelled without notification last month. Additionally, the new management has recently done some renovations to the community room. When I resigned my lease for this year, the community room had a couch, TV, a small table for homework, a pool table and a kitchenette. Now that they removed the community room and converted it into their new leasing office, our new community room is four red chairs and a TV. Not to mention its only unlocked during operating hours for the leasing office (9am-6pm, weekdays & Saturday). I am attaching some images of what my apartment has looked like with the construction over thanksgiving break and right now.
