Resident 2009 - 2011

1/30/2011

I've lived here for almost 2 years in a one-bedroom apartment that looks out over the wetland area. Animals that I've seen: deer (lots), foxes, wild turkeys, hawks, ducks, geese (unfortunately), woodpeckers, a muskrat, finches, scarlet tanagers - all the convenience of city living with the country right outside. Both buildings have elevators, workout rooms, community rooms. Each apartment has its own washer/dryer. Typically, the appliances are as old as the buildings (constructed in 1991), but they have been cared for, at least in my unit. The manuals for everything are here. My apartment has been overrun by ants and fleas, but a little cleaning and a little extermination fixes all. There was a visiting mouse at one time, but no more. Living next to a wooded area, it's not a surprise. Noise does carry, especially in the halls, but management has clear rules about quiet hours and management expects the rules to be obeyed. The underground parking garage is fantastic, because it is heated and well-lighted, but one has to be careful about locking the doors and not leaving valuables in plain sight. Management takes pains not to inform residents directly that car break-in has occurred, but whenever the access code to the garage changes, it's a given that someone's car has been broken into. Maintenance is simply wonderful. I've had light bulbs in the overhead fixture changed promptly twice (It's has a hard to remove covering.) and one minor repair to a door was done the same day that I requested it. The entire garage door was recently replaced. There have been a few incidents of juvenile-type vandalism over the past few months, with door decorations disappearing and entry-way locks being super-glued, but matters were taken care of. Noise does carry in through the walls and floors and surprisingly, management has not yet stated a policy requiring the use of headsets for those music lovers who like the volume cranked to the max. I have 3 closets in my apartment, plus a laundry room that can also accommodate some items. No broom closet, which is a downer for me. My separate storage area is located close by and it's a great place to shove those seasonal items. The microwave that was supplied by the apartment complex is ancient, underpowered and lacking features that are standard on newer models. I tucked it into a corner of the front closet, but will restore it to the proper under-the-cupboard location. I am looking to upgrade to a place that will permit a garden, which is an impossibility for Briar Pond given the large number of roaming deer and also seeking a place with extra sleeping space and additional bathroom for visiting grandchildren.
