Resident 2008 - 2011

10/9/2011

I lived at Casa Loma for several years and, for the most part, thought it was an OK place. But keep in mind that it's a really old building and everything's not perfect: Parking -- The building doesn't have an attached garage. Parking is offered in the office building across the street and, if you can afford the extra $60/month (or whatever it is now), you should pay for it. Trying to find a parking space around the building, like everywhere on the Plaza, is a crap shoot and the area is patrolled frequently by ticket-bearing officers. On the plus side, if you do park in the garage, you'll be parking 6 or 7 floors down, which means it will always be above freezing and any snow/ice on your car is usually gone in the morning. Pool -- Having the pool there is nice, but it's situated between 2 high buildings, so it gets sun between like 11:00 am and 1:15 pm. The rest of the pool area is concrete that gets hot. But, again, it's nice to have it there if you want it. Noise -- I rarely had a problem with noise in Casa Loma, except when some jackass was SCREAMING at his girlfriend one night. The walls and I think floors are concrete, so it's a solid building. If you have a window that faces the Plaza, you will eventually hear noise through the windows from whatever's going on over there. But the building has good windows, which cut out much of the noise. If you don't want to hear noise from the Plaza, you shouldn't live this close to it anyway. Kitchens -- The kitchens are small and disconnected from the rest of the apartment, but that's how apartments were built a long time ago: room-room-room-room. Bathrooms -- At least in the 1-bedrooms, the bathroom is almostly comically small. No way 2 people can use it at the same time. Floors -- I always wished for hardwood floors in this building, but instead they're carpet. You'll either love that or hate it. Laundry -- Nothing special, but if you can do laundry at off-hours, you'll be OK. Heat -- Heat is free and comes through steam radiators, which I loved, but the owner kept the heat low and you couldn't turn it up anymore yourself, so I was frequently cold. You'll have to buy a space heater. You don't pay for electric in this building anyway. Air conditioning -- As far as I know, each unit has a single window unit. I've heard that people on higher floors always had trouble keeping their apartments cool enough with the single window unit, which I believe. Buy a fan to blow the cool air into your bedroom or you'll be hot in there. Elevators -- The only time I had a problem with the elevator is when people were moving in/out and were using the passenger elevator instead of the freight, which they shouldn't have been doing anyway. Deliveries -- Furniture deliveries can sometimes be a problem. Some of the doorways in this building weren't built for larger, modern furniture. And I frequently saw UPS stickers on the front door of the building, meaning no one was there to sign for packages for you. Location -- Personally, I think the location of Casa Loma can't be beat if you want to live close to the Plaza. You're across the creek from everything it has to offer, which means a 1/2 minute walk to get there. And since you're on the other side of the creek, you can drive around whatever parade or dog party or marathon or art show is going on in the Plaza (except for the lighting of the Plaza lights ... no way to avoid that mess). Tenants -- There's a mixture of people in the building, young to old. Lots of professionals. I thought it was a good tenant base. Overall, I would recommend Casa Loma to someone who wants to live near the Plaza and doesn't need a lot of extra services that some newer buildings offer.
