Resident 2013 - 2014

2/28/2014

I am a current resident of The Hamilton so I just wanted to give a realistic review based on my opinions to help people in their apartment search. I'm sorry for the longwinded review, but I don't want to leave anything for the imagination. I'm not a disgruntled resident that is just here to vent. I'll just go through each category with my opinion and then others can form their own on that. First, Parking: I chose to do street parking because I didn't feel that I wanted to pay $50 for an outdoor parking lot. For street parking it really wasn't all that bad. If you come home late you will have to walk a little ways, but if you are home at a decent time you should get a spot relatively close to the building. This doesn't mean that I felt safe with my car there though. There is a lot of foot traffic from "not so trusting" individuals around the street parking. (expected in midtown) Noise: I'll break the noise down into 2 categories. Exterior and Interior. Exterior noise is definitely loud. You will constantly hear sirens and people outside your apartment. Maybe even a domestic dispute or 7. Obviously sirens are never good to hear at night, but if you live here you better get used to it. Interior noise has its ups and downs. On a positive note I've never heard my neighbors above or below me, nor have I had any complaints. You will most definitely hear your neighbors on the sides of you though. The walls are thin and the bathrooms share a vent. This is what made me hate this apartment the most. No one should ever share a vent with a strangers bathroom. It's not only disgusting, but an invasion of your privacy. I could even see through and tell whether my neighbor had a light on in their bathroom. I don't feel that is right. You will also hear every little thing in the hallways. (usual apartment living) Grounds: The grounds on this place are definitely less than satisfactory. The hallways were never really dirty, but the stairwells were always pretty disgusting. I feel that the cleaning lady did a good job keeping up. Plus she is one of the nicest women you will ever meet. The laundry room was terrible. Several washers were out of order when I was there and most of the time they wouldn't have a proper spin cycle. The dryers were almost always broken as well and would usually take 2 hours to dry everything. I also got a package stolen from the lobby. I partially blame the delivery man for thinking that was a good idea, but I prefer to put most of the blame on the ------- that felt he had the right to steal. That's a low move and I hope the blu ray player they stole, that was intended for my mother's Christmas present, malfunctions and shoots discs out of it at an alarming rate and hits them directly in their face causing them to wear an eye patch forever. Safety: As far as the community goes, there is no community unless you want to head up the street to troost and hang out at the summer time block parties. You could probably score some pretty good drugs if you play it cool. (sarcasm). It truly isn't a safe neighborhood. There is always heavy foot traffic in front of the apartment from people who clearly didn't go to work that day and there is a lot of crime in the area. I hate even having my gf come over here because I don't want her outside by herself. Especially after dark. You're required to have renter's insurance before you move in. I also recommend getting a quote on gang inflicted stab insurance. Maybe look for a rape clause in there somewhere too. Construction: I really don't have too many complaints about the apartment other than the bathroom vent and the noise. The appliances are very nice and the kitchen is what sold me on the place. Everything was pretty much brand new. One complaint I really have though is that you can't open your windows. This is a huge inconvenience. Unfortunately the leaky window units don't quite offer a refreshing breeze. Summer is rough because you're going to come home to a sauna every day after work, because nobody wants to leave a window unit running all day. If you could afford to do that you wouldn't be searching for an apartment on the edge of the ------. Unless you're just an adrenaline junky. In that case go skydiving instead. Less chance of getting shot or falling on an infected needle. Aids sucks. Winter is pretty cheap though. The building runs on a boiler system so you don't have to pay for heat. Once you learn the trick of the knobs to turn it on or off it isn't all that bad. My average electricity bill was under $30 a month in the winter. Maintenance: I don't really have too many complaints about maintenance either. The only real problem I had with maintenance was that my window units sucked. One of them got replaced with a nicer one that had a thermostat. That was a solid move on their part. The other unit in the living room is still subpar at best. They got the problem fixed in a timely manner so I can't complain too much. Staff: MAC staff isn't too bad in my opinion. I haven't had to deal with them much so I don't have a big fall out fueling a rant about their lack of professionalism and caring. They were pretty helpful when moving in other than forgetting to mention that you can't walk 2 blocks east of your apartment without risking your wallet getting stolen. If you do head that way you should probably wear some sick --- cargo pants so they have to deal with velcro to pick pocket your personal items. Economical theft deterrent at its finest. You're welcome. I can't blame them for that though. That would be like the guy behind the counter at McDonald's telling you you're going to get fat from the dollar double cheese you just ordered. It's just not good business. Overall I must say that I strongly recommend continuing your apartment search before you sign a lease here. Maybe in a few years the neighborhood will be more developed and a little safer, but right now it definitely isn't. I'll be moving out as soon as my lease is up in a couple of months and can't be more excited. I hope this review helps.
