Resident 2016 - 2017

9/10/2017

Dear Reader, I would strongly recommend that you would not rent an apartment in this complex, or any other apartment/property belonging to the Burkely Community LLC. I repeat, do not sign a lease, it is not worth it even if they would pay you to live there. I want to give 0 stars but that is not possible with the review. I had the misfortune to rent an apartment with this company from August 2016 till July 2017 while pursuing my graduate studies and working for the admissions department at UNC Greensboro. Before I continue I want to disclaim that as a state employee these views are mine alone, and does not represent the views of UNC Greensboro, the University of North Carolina System, or that of the State of North Carolina. Originally drawn by the affordable rent of a single bedroom with 2 roommates, with the promise that I would get fellow graduate students (I did not get those), and show a standard empty three room apartment I accepted the lease. The day before I suppose to move in I picked up the keys and checked out the apartment to only find out that the whole apartment was disgusting, food remains on the floor everywhere, a sticky black residue, trash and dirty dishes everywhere. I was very unhappy and requested to be placed in another unit in the complex. Management refused to move me to another location and sited that I had signed a lease and was bound by it. They however promised me they would send a professional cleaning crew. I moved my stuff in my room and left for two weeks. After I came back the place was still dirty. After complaining they finally send over a cleaning crew. The women from the external cleaning company were really nice & gave me a list of stuff that was broken. They said that if I give the list to management they will come and fix it for me. The faucet was leaking, food trays were missing out of the refrigerating, parts of the microwave were missing, was machine leaking and dryer was not producing heat, the filter of the heating system was missing. I gave the list to management and they placed a work order. However, maintenance was terrible. They said they completed work orders but did not. I ended up talking to the manager Mark Everhardt, but he insulted the cleaning ladies because of the list. According to him, it was not their job to do so. It took 3 months to get some of the equipment fixed after multiple complaints. If that was not enough more issues came to light. After that severe roommate issues started to appear with both roommates as result of their own issues, which started to affect my living space. It was severe enough that after consultation with resources at UNC Greensboro that they helped arrange alternative living arrangements at another property at Berkeley communities. However, Mark Everhardt refused to let me transfer to one of the other properties. He only allowed me to move within the complex. I accepted reluctant and moved in January. The microwave door was broken, there was considerable floor damage at some parts, and cockroaches appeared, which I reported. I did not care about since it was much better than the old situation. However, I had to pay more rent. I did not mind, because I was happy to be out of that toxic situation and had not current roommate. 2 days later I had to call in again maintenance, because the heating system kept not working. After 3 calls they finally realized something was broken. They shot down the air conditioning unit but took 2.5 months before they fixed the system. Also within two weeks, someone broke into my apartment, because maintenance did not lock a window in one of the locked bedrooms (conclusion from police). The alarm had gone off, but the supposed security never came to the apartment. Even more, when asking to look at the security tapes they could not produce it. I received a phonecall from the police saying they could find nothing. When I asked about the tapes they said what tapes, when they called the complex they said they had looked through the tapes. However, when I called them, they said they had not even reviewed them at all. The investigation was shut down based on the statement of Sebastian village. In march I got a transfer roommate without real notice. He started displaying disturbing traits not only towards me but to the neighbors. Not being able to deal with the situation and fearing my safety I moved out a month before the end of the lease.
