Resident 2014 - 2015

1/13/2015

I have lived in a one bedroom apartment with my boyfriend for about a year. I'd say that overall, this apartment was in the middle. It's a decent size. The dining room is a bit small, you can't fit more than a small table. The kitchen has two entrances .It was a little bit out of date, though. The pantry was huge, the size of a walk in closet. There was a lot of natural light from the balcony and the window in the dining room, which I loved. The living room was a pretty good size. The bedroom was a little small, but pretty common for an apartment. It has a nice walk-in closet. The bathroom had two entrances, one to the bedroom and one to the living room. But the doors had a difficult time shutting. When we moved in, we felt like the apartment was clean, but it wasn't fixed up. There were a lot of small things wrong and we were disappointed. The balcony door was extremely difficult to open, even after it was 'fixed.' The windows had major ice build-up in the winter months and we had to put towels beside them. Our dishwasher flooded the second time we used is and sat with stagnant water for a couple of days before it could get fixed. I don't think they were ever very timely or efficient when it came to fixing things. It either took awhile (a few days to a week) before it got done or it wasn't ever really fixed. Oh, a rung on the balcony just fell off because it was old. I know it sounds like these were just a bunch of bad experiences, but it wasn't all negative. Neighbors were friendly for the most part. There are only six apartments per washer/dryer. I practically had it to myself. There's a mixture of all ages at Cambridge, which I liked. I was always meeting someone new on walks. The buildings were spread out a bit, which gave it a courtyard effect. I thought it was scenic and very visual. Most of the office people were nice, but they didn't always know what they were talking about. When we called them to double check information, people would often give us different answers. When we moved in, we asked about the pet policy and they told us dogs under 40 lbs were allowed, plus all kitties. But then, we got a kitten and they said it wasn't allowed if it were under a year old. We also had a dog and when we registered him, one lady commented that he sure looked like he weighed too much for the limit. We showed the paperwork and went on our way. It was kind of offensive though, especially since we'd seen multiple dogs living there that weighed at least 60 lbs. Theresa is the office lady that everyone seemed to have a problem with. She gets attitude sometimes and people generally don't seem to like her. Yet she's been promoted. The doggie poop bag thing was mostly empty and people left poop in those areas a lot, which was annoying. At one time, it took them 2 months before they switched the trash bad in the thing. But come spring it usually got a bit cleaned up. One night, my boyfriend forgot to lock his car and his gps and camera got stolen. This could have happened anywhere, but it sucks none the less. Overall, it was a good experience. We had a lot of minor things that bothered us, but nothing major happened. The apartments are slightly out of date, but they're reasonable for the price. The garages also need a little work. It's close to the interstate, a Hyvee, some shopping and restaurants. I really like the location. I could walk to the store. You can hear some church bells chiming from time to time, which was soothing. It always smelled of brownies in the winter (still not sure why). I didn't hear my neighbors through the wall as is often the problem, but I could hear people above. Nothing that's a big deal, though. I could find parking right beside my building every night. There were never any bugs, either. Overall, good first time apartment. Staff could use some training and it could be better kept up. Oh, wish the doors had more than dead bolts, though!
