Resident 1999 - 2003

4/5/2003

I live here since 1999 (almost 4 years) and have mostly warm feelings toward this place.

PROS:
My 2-bdrm apartment is spacious and has a "patio" which is a balconi large enough to have a swing or a full size patio table in it. Eat-in kitchen in my floorplan is adequate for 2 tables (high breakfast and dining).

Apartment has all the appliances it needs, but washer/drier are economy-sized.

Complex is no-frills, has some landscaping but no playgrounds or any good place for a child to play. Parking space is sufficient.

Edison is a safe city overall and I had no safety-related problems here at all.

Hallways are clean but noisy at times.

Maintenance is quick if you know your super (don´t bother to call a landlord or a rental office - just learn who is your super and call him directly). I was truly amazed by the handling of one emergency I had this year. A water heater in my apartment started to leak scalding-hot water, and it happened around midnight Saturday. The neighbors downstairs came complaining of the leak. It looked horrible. The super came, stopped the leak, and drained the boiler in few minutes. To my great suprise the next morning, Sunday, at 9am the super was back replacing the boiler and it was done by noon.

CONS:
The floorplan is bad (looks amateurish - 2 rooms are 2 times long as wide). Take a living room 12x23 with few doorways in the midway on each of the longer sides. No matter how we tried (and did we!) we could not make it look as a single room. Whatever you do makes one part of the room detached and isolated from the other.

A master bedroom is equal trouble -- it is too long. At the same time the bathrooms are tiny. Literally, the main bathroom is so small, you can´t open a door if someone is inside.

Closet space is small and some closets are so tiny so they are dysfunctional. Say, a coat closet by the entrance only 1 foot wide.

Hallways are OK as I said before, but children often play there and it can be noisy. Hallways do not have adequate ventilation. The apartment ventilation comes out into the hallways and they are isolated from the outside air by entrance doors. So the smell of indian food can be VERY strong at times and SIMPLY strong most of the time. Hallways are VERY hot during summer months.

Air condition is noisy. Good thing is it is outside the living room, but still the noise is bad in the smaller bedroom.

LOCATION:
This complex is located ajacent to an indian village but I never saw it as a problem. Lots of indian restaurants nearby.
Otherwise the place is rather secluded, nothing to do here without a car and probably a second car is a must too.
