Resident 2002 - 2003

9/5/2003

I wouldn´t allow my worst enemies to live here!

My partner and I are coming to the end of our one year lease. We have had mostly nothing but trouble when it comes to this building. While the apartment itself is very nice (we have a very large studio with more closet space than most can find in a 2 BR; also decent appliances in kitchen & bath), the rest of the building and the management is beyond belief (and not in a good way)! The fire alarm has gone off 15-20 times in just 12 months, most times in the middle of the night! 99% of the time, it has been a false alarm and people are so used to the alarms, no one even ventures out of their apartments when it goes off to see if it´s for real. THIS is going to cause a lot of people to die one day when there is a real fire. Management & security never really seem to find out why the alarm goes off time after time. TRUST US...this alarm will jolt you out of your sleep so suddenly, you will not fall asleep for the rest of the night.

Even though the apartments include "central air conditioning," remember that you have one wall unit and the temperature is not controlled by tenants. The air was not turned on until the last week in June and many times in the summer, it has been turned off for more than 24 hours for "emergency repairs." Keep in mind that each apartment is covered in windows (good for natural light), but without any air and when it starts to get warm, it´s almost unbearable in the apartment.

The staff in the office is some of the rudest I have ever encountered and are VERY, VERY lazy! On the other hand, the security guards stationed in the lobby of each tower are all very nice and greet you time after time. They accept most packages & are a pleasure to see each day. Maintenance is super fast with requests & bugs seem to be a very small problem. We keep a very clean apartment and still find some bugs from time to time. This can probably be contributed more to the dirty "international" tenants than anything else.

Another MAJOR disadvantage is the horrible smells that fill the hallways every single day. Even though they are repeatedly told to open windows and vent bad cooking smells, all of the "international" tenants choose to stink up the common areas all of the time. And, unless you request to have a door extender put on the bottom of your apartment door to get rid of the void space, those horrible smells WILL get in your apartment for a very long time.

There is a plus in living so close to the Grove St. PATH (it´s right across the street), but there´s not a lot to do for young professionals around the area.

We are now moving to Hoboken, which is ABSOLUTELY recommended for any young professionals who can pay a little bit more than what they pay for rent in Jersey City. It´s worth it.

If you are stuck on living in Jersey City, you should live somewhere in the Pavonia/Newport area, as it´s also very nice.

There is a parking lot at Metropolis for a fee, but NO visitor parking is offered if you have out of town guests.
Apartments themselves are very quiet because walls, floors, and ceilings are all cement. Other neighbors are very quiet, as well. The most noise we ever hear is the building´s fire alarms and the fire trucks from outside.

Overall, if you´re not picky about the outward facilities and fellow renters, go with this building...it´s a good value for someone right out of college or new to the city. After that, though, get the hell out...
