Resident 2011 - 2013

4/5/2013

Overall, the two years I lived at Ivy Hill were awful. I lived in building 5-25, which is supposedly the best one. Also spent a lot of time in 250. Here's a list of pros and cons: Pros: - Parking on site, $60 a month. - 24/7 security guards - Building 5-25 is quiet, aside occasional from police sirens and city buses - Utilities included - Laundry room on site - Some apartments have nice views - You won't lose power. I never lost power during the October 2011 Snowmageddon, Irene, or Sandy. Everyone else around Ivy Hill did lose power. Cons: - Parking lot is in horrible shape (potholes and such), break-ins do happen despite security guards being present. They only kinda-sorta plow when it snows. - Security guards are often found sleeping - Kitchens and bathrooms are tiny. - The washing machines like to tear your clothes (especially towels and sheets) and don't really get them clean. - Your chance of having hot water is about 50/50. It's either barely lukewarm or scalding hot (165F to be exact, I measured it). - Your chance of having decent heating is 50/50 as well. During the winter my apartment ranged from 64F to 84F when the heat was working. - The boilers tend to breakdown on the coldest days of the year, leaving you with no heat or hot water when it's in the 10s or 20s outside. It happened at least 6 times this winter. - There were problems with roaches in my apartment even though I kept it spotless. - The vent fans in the bathroom pretty much never work, which means you get to smell other people's bowel movements and pot smoke while you're brushing your teeth or showering. It also means that the paint in your bathroom cracks, peels, and bubbles. - Your requests to get things fixed go unanswered most of the time. Even if you speak to the director himself, things rarely get fixed. Eventually I just gave up. - The elevators had a habit of breaking down. Really sucks if you live on the top floors. - Water pressure above the 10th floor is a gamble. Some days it's Niagara falls, some days it's a small trickle. A lot of times it changes throughout the course of a shower, which means the temperature fluctuates wildly as well. - In some buildings the windows in the hallway have no screens, which means the pigeons come inside and poop all over the halls. The outside window ledge is also caked in a thick coat of pigeon poop, which just smells lovely after a warm summer rain. - You're just a few blocks away from some of the more dangerous parts of Newark and Irvington. - USPS won't deliver packages. They'll leave you a notice 5-7 days after it was supposed to get there saying that you have to go to the post office to pick it up. Other mail often arrives several days to a week late. In the end, I would never live at Ivy Hill again. Not even if you paid me.
