Resident 2008

1/25/2008

I've lived here for 2 years and although it's big, spacious and generally in decent condition, squirrels and birds are constantly getting into the attic, making noise and DYING! That makes for a nasty smell! I recently found a dead bird under the broiler pan under the oven - a mouse is one thing, but an adult bird was a bit of a surprise. The top floor apartments have holes above the windows that go into the eves for ventilation and they're suppose to have screens so birds/insects can't get in, but there are few screen in place. If you look around you'll see bird crap all over EVERY top floor window, as well as nests in many of the holes. This wouldn't be so bad, but the birds are pretty loud in the morning especially in spring and fall while they're migrating. I seriously think these birds have marked the aparment complex on their radar because there are swarms of them at times! I've spent a few too many mornings banging on the window at 7am to get them to stop squawking and scratching around. Because the complex wasn't really motivated to put screens in, my roommate and I duct tapped the holes shut! Worked for a while, but these birds are vicious! probably a reason why they don't bother fixing the holes. But somehow, like I said, one bird got into our apartment and died under our stove where we cooked him dry with oven use. The squirrels are another story. These guys are somehow getting into the attic and running around. It's a little creepy hearing them scratching around above your head when you're lounging in your home. First the exterminator would come over and set a live trap and get the squirrels out. Prob is that they didn't fix the hole so they'd keep coming back in! Finally they 'fixed' the hole and all was well for a while, but as soon a it gets cold they find a way back in and start scratching around again. We've been dealing with this one for over a year and the damn things are still getting in. The exterminator recently found a dead one in there and removed it. I understand that these things happen and upkeeping an apartment is hard work, but the people who worked there just laughed it off like not a big deal - think rotting bodies, feces, parasites all over your attic and white stuff streaked all over your windows. I couldn't even leave my windows open, cuz one day i came home to find bird crap all over my pillow cuz a bird shat and the wind blew it through the window screen! I suppose if you're from a 3rd world country and are used to living with animals running around and dying in your apartment, then you'd be fine (which seemed to be the case - I clearly remember the manager there trying to get us to take a bottom unit because his friend who lived above that unit didn't want any more ------- moving in below him stinking up the place with curry)!! I love animals and the outdoors, but it was enough to push my roomie and I out to find something better. Other than that, the complex was safe, in a convenient area, and parking was generally available. Just get a bottom floor apartment if you can.
