Resident 2005

11/21/2005

Arning - review is long and rambling.

I am internet-savvy but somehow I didn't come across this site while doing research. Minus points for me. If I had read the reviews before I would have been swayed into not renting this apartment.
I didn't know that part of the complex is allocated for low-income families till I read the reviews here (that explains some things). Is management obliged to report that to prospecive renters? It's upsetting, frankly. I'm paying full premium rent - about $1650 for a 1 brdm, 1.5 bath (after 1 month off). I could've done with a much cheaper garden apt in this area but the wife doesn't want anything to do with them.

The Good:
- Apartments themselves are fairly decent. 3 years old. Dishwasher, fridge, washer/dryer, microwave are new and of good quality. Nice to have washer in unit. Our main bathroom is spacious, balcony is nice. Carpet is your basic beige, but clean, not skanky. Walls got a fresh coat before we moved in. Central AC works well, but noisy -- in summer there's a constant loud drone from all the cranked-up units. Haven't tried heater yet. Good closet space in kitchen and bahtroom, ok elsewhere. But you have to be creative with storage if you're living in an apt.
Not a bad unit to live in till we figure out a way to buy our own place in this overpriced state.
Plenty of parking.
Nice clubhouse. But don't be seduced by it because you will use it less than you think. Been to the gym a few time. Good mix of equipment.
Grounds are well-maintained
No problems with mgmt, but honestly haven't had to deal much with them. Had a couple of power issues which were fixed promptly. The maint. guy was nice. Did I just get lucky? Dunno. When we moved in the leasing agent John was very helpful.
Cablevision installed cable, internet and local/long-dist phone access for $95 a month. Great deal.
Burglar alarm and intercom system
Atleast my next door neighbor is nice. He usually goes downstairs before me to get the newspaper and picks up mine too.

Bad:
- Carpets in hallway skanky.
- Guards will let anyone in with a wave and a smile. But delivery folks do get stopped.
- Some residents are hard-headed. Despite repeated pleas from mgmt people still drop their junk mail on the mailroom floor.
- Some people don't believe in neighborly conduct. A few times we've been annoyed by people standing in the parking lot and carrying out loud conversations with friends on top floor balconies.
The last 2 points may be explained by the widely varying demographic mix.
- Thumping noise sometimes from folks upstairs, but nothing too bad.

Conclusion:
I've been here over 6 months now. If I could do it over again probably wouldn't rent this place because I'm overpaying and ocassional issues with some people not playing good neighbors.
But, the apartment itself is in good shape and quiet for the most part, so I give it a passing grade.
Hope this helps prospective renters.

Update: 3/24/06
So I'm about ready to move out after almost a year here. We bought our own house.
Some of the reservations I've voiced above remain, but I wrote the review right after I found that rent is based on income and other factors. But overall we've had no reason to complain. We've had a pleasant stay here and would recommend it to anyone.
