smokers haven

I moved into this place 2 years back, and immediately fell in love with the place! Walks by the harbor every day, swimming pool, tennis court - just a beautiful looking place to live in! Over a few months the problems started showing through - even though the place is advertised as smoke and pet free, it really is not. We ended up keeping all our windows closed all through the year, because our neighbours smoked on their patio at all times. All of them! Also in summer the apartment heats up to 90s inspite of the Air conditioner being on all day. These are really old air conditioners from grandma's time, and they would not let us buy and install a new air conditioner even when we would be paying out of pocket. In fact the repair person that visited our apartment because we had a problem with the excessive noise that the AC makes, tried to tell us that these ACs make noise because they are so powerful! He refused to believe that they weren't cooling our apartment! A number of our neighbours had the same complaint. I guess if you are going to live here, you better like it warm! Another reality that strikes you soon after you move in is that you get to know your neighbors REALLY well! The wooden floors are quite creaky and the walls are thin, but I guess that will be an issue with most apartments. We had a particularly rough time since our neighbor bought a treadmill the whole building would shake when he was on it for an hour everyday! The management told us they could only ask him not to use it if it was after hours ( after 11 PM ). Fortunately he was nice enough to use it (most times) in the middle of the day, so if it bothered me a lot, I would just go out! The laundry room here has 2 washer driers, and 10 families share it. These are very old machines and very small, as well as operated with quarters. The clothes will not be washed well, and will come out all crinkly, even when you put very few clothes at a time. We had to do multiple loads each time, and over the weekend, it's quite a queue sometimes. I highlighted the negative points first, because it is really easy to fall in love with the appearance of the place! We had a harbor view apartment, and I loved waking up to the view! We were also able to keep our kayak in the rack there, and go kayaking on the seneca river. I did my best to overlook more practical concerns when I renewed my lease the first time. But after spending a whole winter with a bathroom that always stank of smoke ( probably due to the heat ducts), I decided it way time to move to a more practical place. The positives are a good ambience, safe environment and prompt response to any complaint - even when they offer no solution, they always show up and tell you the problem is in your head!
