Resident 2008 - 2010

8/18/2010

I lived at Chapel Hill for 2 years and it was 2 years too many. To start, I was fooled by the superficial appearance of the place. They decorate the hallways well and the outside of the building looks nice. The apartment I saw had hardwood floors and looked good. However once you live there you realize that it's not worth it. The apartments do not have real walls and instead are divided by pseudo-walls that do not fully close off your room. In addition, you can hear all the conversations by your neighbors and in turn they can hear you. The mouse problem is also bad. The building is a former catholic school building and I should have known mice would be all over the place. Since the building is drafty, if you are a non-smoker and a smoker lives near your apt, either on your floor or the floor above or below you then watch out. I had to air out my apartment almost every day even though it was winter and 20-30 degrees outside. Smoke will freely flow into your apartment from your neighbor. And yes, the contract says that people are allowed to smoke in the apartment building. Lastly, the toilet in my apt was horrible. I had to use my plunger every single day because it constantly got backed up. I've never had that problem anywhere else. However what made this place even worse in my mind is the management company - Flower City Management. When I moved out, I made sure to clean my apartment. Several weeks after I moved I received only part of my deposit in the mail. Roughly $170 was subtracted by Sandra, the landlord, for cleaning expenses. The letter looked like a form letter and stated that somebody had to clean the cabinets, kitchen, oven, stove, bathroom, etc etc. The letter didn't make sense to me since I cleaned the kitchen, the microwave, the oven, the bathroom etc. I called Sandra, and she insisted that the bathroom had been dirty. When I asked her to specify she was not able to give any specifics. She then stated that she had to replace the toilet seat. I stated that would be considered normal wear and that I wasn't responsible for that expense. In addition she said she didn't make me pay for the 3 light bulbs that were burned-out, and also implied that one of the bathroom light bulbs that was missing was stolen by me and that she didn't make me pay for that either (It was a dead bulb and I threw it out). She then went on to say that maintaining a large building requires lots of money and that she has to pay insurance for her cleaning lady, etc. At several points in the conversation I had to tell her that the point of the conversation was that the apt was cleaned and that she was changing the subject. The point of this is that she is dishonest and has no qualms in taking your deposit and then accusing you of stealing light bulbs and lying about cleaning the apt in order to justify her dishonesty. The last apartment I was in I received my full deposit back and I cleaned it the same way. Buyer beware. Keep my experience in mind when checking out this place.
