Resident 2013 - 2015

7/10/2015

Unfortunately, since my move in date, things have gradually gotten worse. My boyfriend and I moved in two years ago and there were some red flags I should have seen from the beginning. The number one red flag being the complete lack of interest or concern the landlord had toward us. We had set up three separate appointments with her initially to look at the apartments, go over the lease, sign paperwork, etc. We were from out of the area so we had to travel two and a half hours to just get here and see her. The first time she rushed us along viewing the apartments within about twenty minutes, the second time she wasn't at the office and it took a couple hours of calling to get a hold of her, and the third time she was nowhere to be found once again and when we finally got a hold of her she said she was with family and it was inconvenient for her (EVEN THOUGH WE HAD SET UP AN APPOINTMENT WITH HER TWO WEEKS PRIOR TO THIS!) Throughout our stay we have encountered several maintenance issues (broken lock, lights going out, floor boards migrating from foundation problems). The biggest one was when we had sewage backing up into our bathtub (we live in one of the 1 bedroom basement apartments). We immediately called maintenance and the guy that came over took a look and called the landlord in another room and we heard him quietly asking her if he should call in a plumber since it was late at night. He then came out and told us that someone would be here the next morning. At this point our bathtub was literally three-quarters full of feces and urine and whatever else the upstairs neighbors had been flushing down their toilets. It took me calling the landlord and threatening to call the health department for them to get a plumber out immediately. Keep in mind, it costs a lot more to have plumbers come for night calls which is probably why they didn't want to have anyone come. Our landlord ensured us someone would be out right away and that they would completely disinfect our bathroom. Funniest part is, my boyfriend and I ended up buying the cleaning supplies to clean and disinfect the entire thing ourselves. The next day all of the tenants got a letter saying that they can and will be charged for another situation such as this. (Even though clearly whatever was backing up into our tub was from our UPSTAIRS neighbors.) On top of this, the rent has increased every year, all of us tenants get threatening letters every month about some new requirement they have, one of them being to have area rugs in all "high traffic areas" or else "you will get evicted". Ironic that they tore up the carpets themselves before we moved in in order to charge more for rent. Overall, not a good experience at all. I advise you to look at ALL of your options because the lack of care this management group has shown to us is just unacceptable to say the least. We are easily some of the quietest and most polite tenants here and to be treated how we have been is just frustrating and discouraging.
