Resident 2003 - 2007

7/25/2007

I have lived at Berkshire for quite some time and was happy here for most of my time. This community, however, has gone extremely downhill very quickly. In April of 2007 my car was broken into, in the "secure" garage that was provided to me. I was one of at least 9 victims, all of whose cars were parked in the Berkshire garages, all of which need different keys to gain access to. When my stereo was stolen, the thief damaged my dash and some of the wiring inside, which has forced me to drive my car without turn signals and with my heat turned on all summer since I cannot afford to fix the damage. After the first break-in I asked management to change the lock on the entry doors and the garage, since it was aparent to myself and the police that the thief had keys in order to access the garages (there was no sign of damage to any of the doors). The management refused to do so, claiming that it was an outside perpetrator, and that the crime could not have been committed by any employee or resident. In July of 2007 my car was broken into again, once again parked in the garage. I know of at least 3 other victims from this occurance, all of whom parked in different garages from myself. Though I had not been able to replace any of my cds or my stereo from the last time, my lock was drilled out on my driver's side door so that the thief could steal a cheap boombox and my bookbag. This time the police found the garage key that the thief used to gain access on top of one of the other victims cars. The police asked Berkshire Management for a list of names of residents or employees who have access to multiple garages. Berkshire refused to comply, stating that they don't have any records of their key-holders. The building manager further stated that if she had to change the locks everytime someone moved out and didn't return their keys, all she would do is change locks. In fact, the landlord may hold any vacating resident's deposit if they fail to return their keys. If the building doesn't want to bother people about keys, isn't it reasonable to believe that they have at least changed your locks to keep any previous resident from gaining access to your apartment? Berkshire's management has made me feel like covering up for one of their employees who is disturbing residents' property is more important than protecting long-term residents. I have never been late on rent, I have never bothered any other resident, and no one has ever filed a complaint against me. Yet, Berkshire refused to cooperate with any of my requests to make the building more secure after the initial break-in, and failed to aid the police in aprehending the thief who is bound to vandalize/steal property from its residents again. I do not ask much of my landlord, I just wish that Berkshire cared more about me than they do protecting the thief that probably works for them.
