I have lived at the Aberdeen for about 2 years now. This is a great location in downtown and right on the edge of the Historical District. Where to begin... I was told the building was originally constructed in tne 1920s, and it is very lovely on the inside and out. There is covered parking with reserved spaces (which are quite large) along with gates into the complex. When I moved in, I was told the gates would be working within a month. It took a year and a half and my car getting broken into TWICE before the community became fairly secure. The only safety issue I've had were the car breakins, and the second one happened when the gates were supposed to be working. This building was constructed correctly - I rarely heard my neighbors. HOWEVER, I am marking only 3 stars because a train track runs about a half mile away, and it can get quite loud sometimes (I never thought I would be able to sleep thru a train at 3am, but I don't even register them anymore). The overall appearance of the Aberdeen is lovely - has a bit of vintage charm and looks pricey. The interior of the building has been remodeled over the years and kept in excellent condition. I viewed 3 apartments in the Aberdeen before I moved in - all had different floor plans and color schemes, crown molding, and really tall ceilings. The office staff has been helpful and friendly and fairly prompt in returning my phone calls or emails. I have never had a problem with insects/spiders, thankfully. My most major concern falls in the AC system. In 2004, we never had AC problems (central system for the entire building). This past summer 2005 was a big exception. The AC was on the fritz all summer and finally crashed and burned mid July - 100 degree heat and high in an 8 story building with no breeze and multiple fans going is not an easy situation to live with. It was so miserable during the nights, I had to stay with friends. The problem was temporarily fixed after about 2 weeks, but died soon after with no resolution before winter. I have been told repeatedly that the AC will be fixed for this summer 2006. I had many difficulties contacting a living person at D&S Property Management while trying to get a status report as none were being posted or emailed to residents after so long a period of time; I left about four voicemails and finally was able to get a call back two weeks later. The gentleman I spoke with was rather rude and short with me, although I am aware he was under a lot of stress, but I was still not pleased with the huge delay in receiving information. I was also informed to 'just open the windows', which really ticked me off because all 7 windows and 3 fans were up and going in the middle of the night and my thermometer would read a low for the night at 98 degrees. This has been my only experience with D&S and I am not at all pleased with their customer service. The staff at the Aberdeen were much more friendly than the property owners. If you are looking into renting, please make sure to address the AC issue. Overall, recommend vs not recommend is almost 50/50, but I'll give it a thumbs up as it really is a clean, nice looking community.
