Resident 2002 - 2006

9/5/2008

As the former manager of the former"University Commons" I thought that I would "check in" On comments from the 2006-2007 school year residents. I have to say that I was not surprised by the comments and statements posted. Prior to the close of escrow, the new owners, GMH Properties forced me to fire all leasing agents that did not live on the property. GMH policy was not to pay student leasing agents for work but to issue"rent credits" Rent credits do not put dinner on the table, even if it's Ramen. Student housing is always a difficult propostion,be you staff or resident. Every year there will always be a percentage of residents who really are interested in hell raising and could care less about their fellow residents or the people that must deal with their behavior and the extensive property damage. However, every year there are young residents that are extremely impressive and an honor to know and serve. Drugs, unfortunatly, will always be a part of young life but when I managed the Commons I had to deal with a very hardcore"profesional" drug dealer. Not only did he physically threaten and harm some residents but he threatened my wife and attempted to ambush me on two occasions. Witness's to his dealings sat in my office and related drug dealings by this individual to two Eugene detectives who did nothing. I was forced to arm myself legally. The property was purchased by Chase village in August, 2007. GMH owned it less than one year. To them it was just a Flip. I suppose that explains the way the 2006-2007 residents were treated. I must say, that based on the comments that I have read from the 2006-2007 residents, I must agree that you should have lived elsewhere. It was my marketing staff that got all of you to sign leases and had I been retained, none of you would have been treated as shabbily as you were. My former staff, most of which was retained by GMH badmouthed me afdter my departure. These were the same people that I got raises for, gave paid time off to get term papers completed and gave as many "perks" as I possibily could to. One of them, Anna Gieger told my son that they did it because they were afraid of loosing their jobs. Such loyalty. One staff member, who I had a high opinion of and offered a marketing job to upon graduation, turned out to be the worst of them all. She was in league with the drug dealer that I mentioned and turned into a ---- in her treatment of residents after I left the commons. All of this being said and with a revealing of some of the back story knowledge that I have on the recent history of the commons, I must say the the posting regarding the resident experinces of the 2006-2007 school year must be true and accurate. I no longer live in the Eugene/Springfield area so I cannot comment on how Chase Village has run the commons other than saying I have seen no postings for the 2007-2008 school year Gary Gilfoy
