Resident 2013 - 2014

6/11/2014

Run away!!! First of all, this place is ------, and not worth the money you dump into it. It's not a safe complex. There's crazy people wandering the street, and if you're at the front of the complex (like we were), it's really noisy from cars, schizophrenic people on the sidewalks or in the H-Mart/Bi-Mart parking lot, sirens, etc--and the noise is all night long. While we lived there, apartments were broken into, even in daylight hours when the tenants were home! It was the worst decision we ever made moving into that place, and I'm more than grateful we moved out. I don't want anyone else to make the mistake we did. Second of all, the management sucks. Obnoxious notes stuck to your door, day in and day out that say things like, "Good news! You need to move your car before 7:00 am, or it will be towed." Tenants pay for those spots, and should damn well be able to use them. But more often than not, they're being forced to move their car. And God forbid you miss the notice! They often don't give you ample warning, and if you don't happen to see it on your door, you may wake up to the surprise of a missing car and a new bill you can't afford to get your missing car back. Maintenance inspections every six months--and yes, they do actually do perform these invasive inspections. It's really just their way of checking up on how people are using their homes. They are also looking for a reason to fine you. These people are money hungry and will nab your pennies soon as they see them. There was mold growing in the apartment, in bathrooms, closets, around windows, and on the walls. The ceilings didn't seem stable, and the floors felt like they were on the verge of rotting out. We always had to be careful where we stepped because some places we could actually feel the floor sinking under our weight, like we were going to fall right through the floor. The heating bill was also astronomical due to the terribly old windows, leaks in the walls, and gaps between the wall and the front door. And speaking of fees, the landlord loves to charge you for every little thing. Tacking on miscellaneous fees for "Water and Garbage" and claiming that the fees are "refundable (if the bills go down)" is NOT ok, but this place seems to think it's absolutely fine. And no, that money won't be coming back. The complex has no intention of refunding anything, and they really shouldn't lie about it. The tenants never see these "bills," so they don't even know what they're paying for. Nor can they see whether or not the "bills" have gone up or down. They're just forced to take the landlord at their word. So even if the bills do go down, the tenants wouldn't have a clue, and the landlord could just keep charging. And how can anyone know that the bills actually went up in the first place if they never see proof of the bill? The worst part is, every time they do maintenance on the apartment complex, or add recycling bins, or get washers/dryers repaired, those "fees" go up (Duh! They think people are that stupid?). They even stated in one of their obnoxious notices that they had to unclog two toilets, and if anyone else complains about a clogged toilet, they're going to raise the rent. The building is as old as George Washington, and the pluming is ------ (no pun intended). Their pipes are clogged beyond belief, yet they blame the tenants if the toilet needs a plumber. It's no fault of the tenants that their toilets clog. In the time my family and I lived there, we had a toilet clog from nothing more than it's own water being flushed down it. It's the landlord's problem to fix these things, not the tenant. Legally, they could be taken to court for raising rent to cover maintenance costs like that. That's like saying that tenants have to pay for the maintenance out of their own pockets--which is absolutely illegal! Not to mention, it makes tenants feel like they can't ask to have repairs done on their apartment, for fear of having more bills they can't afford. This place nickel and dimes you to death. There's a pool (which is another reason it's not right to charge the tenants for water, because there's no meter on the individual apartments, and who's to say the water isn't going into the pool, or being used to water the apartment manager's flowers?), but the whole time we lived there, we never once used it. Every time I saw people in it, I saw the apartment manager yelling at them for using it. We never knew when it was opened or closed. There was no sign. But we were afraid to get in it. The apartment manager watches everything and everyone like a vulture. She thinks everyone else's business is her own, and she's just waiting for you to do something your not supposed to, so she can nab you for every penny. The neighbors we had were always fighting, and the walls are thin, so we heard every cuss word, every slap, every scream. Sometimes I was so scared that actually had 911 dialed on my phone. We were all afraid that one of them was going to pull a gun. It felt like only a matter of time. And I didn't want us to be present if that occurred, as the bullet would surely fly right through those paper-thin walls. I also didn't want my kids to have to hear the cuss-mouthed neighbors bickering. Or the neighbor's kids being abused (because that happened too). It sounded exactly like a bad talk show. We spent many terrified nights in that apartment. The list goes on, so please, don't bother looking at the apartments at Firgrove Village. Take my advice and invest your pennies in a better apartment--a place where you will feel safe and have the privacy you deserve to have in your own home.
