Resident 2008 - 2009

6/21/2009

I moved to Northfield with one roommate just out of college, and while it was a battle to get the place (which says something about the professionalism of our landlady), I have enjoyed living here. I am in a 2BR/1B, and the space itself is lovely. The living room is huge; the kitchen has decent appliances and counter space; the bedrooms are spacious, and the closets are amazing. Our bathroom has been a cause of problems - a leaky toilet made a bad impression on our downstairs neighbors, but I will say that the maintenance crew never took more than an hour to get to us, irregardless of time of day or night. They made bandaid fixes - they never fixed the cracked ceilings - and we kept calling about the plumbing. Two other major complaints: our floors squeak terribly because of the way they are constructed and they were quite thin, which irritated both myself/roommate and my downstairs neighbors because we could hear them talking/watching TV/snoring and they could hear us, plus the squeaking; and cracks appeared in the ceiling quite quickly, including a few that leaked, although not enough to do damage. Our landlady was perhaps one of the problems of the apartment. From the beginning, she was erratic and bordering on unprofessional. When we first decided we wanted the apartment, she hesitated accepting our application so another person could view our apartment, even though we were ready with checks in hand. She then proceeded to promise us anything we needed, including being like our mom-away-from-home, and failed to follow through on pretty much everything. We asked for our parking spot - that took eight months. We would call, leave messages, and she would not call us back. When we had questions after just moving in, she set up a meeting with my roommate, myself, and my mother; she then told us, after she was late to the meeting without calling, that she couldn't make it. Once my mother got on the phone, the landlady hustled over. Clearly, she didn't take two just-out-of-college women seriously as tenants, which I would understand in some cases, but we were honestly good tenants. It's one thing to make no promises and not come through; it's another to make all these ridiculous remarks and then fail to act. All in all, I would recommend this complex to others. It is an older crowd living here (median age approx. 70), and many of them were very kind and welcoming (other less so). The grounds are lovely and they decorate for the seasons. Our apartment space itself was fantastic, and much better than most first-year apartments. We were able to spend about $130.00 total for electricity and cable without the A/C running; it was great having heat included. There was a washer/dryer on each floor of each complex, so we only shared it with three other apartments. It cost $1.25 per wash and dry in quarters, and with no change machine that was sometimes inconvenient, but great that we almost never had to wait to do laundry. There was very little traffic noise and it is a fabulous location in regard to getting on 22; getting to 378; exploring South Bethlehem; or enjoying the more open space of the North Side, including Monacacy Park. There is also a Wegmans five minutes up 512 (Center St). There were definitely some things lacking (reliable plumbing and landlady), but those were honestly minor and irregular problems. All in all, a good year at Northfield.
