Resident 2003 - 2012

9/8/2012

from 2012 -- Just a follow-up, given all the negative reviews of late. I still live here as of 2012, and everything I wrote back in 2006 is still true. TGM added dogs under 25 lbs to the allowed pet list, so now there is a mini parade of tiny feet in the morning when I'm going out to work. While I don't have a dog, I love playing with my neighbors' dogs on occasion. I was worried about barking, but I've been blessed with quiet neighbors, inside and out. Maintenance is still good to me, and handle some storm damage to the roof like professionals. We have painters working on the outside and common areas now. I am still happy living here. Do make sure this is a good match for you before moving here. Some people just can't handle wooden floors. from 2006 -- After nearly 4 years I've had my share of experience with the place. It was stressful at times, but I'm happy to stay for a few more years while saving for a house. I love the grounds and my view, complete with rabbits and a variety of birds. Trees are plentiful around the parking lot, but I've never had a problem with fallen branches harming my car. I've had some issues with the apartment and my neighbors, but everything has been pretty good for the past year. Maintainance problems have been fixed within a day, or they've told me how long (and why) it will take to complete. I have no problem with the guys on maintainance coming in when I'm not here. I've certainly had more than loose change out in the open when they've come by and nothing was touched except what was broken. I rarely hear anything from my 2nd floor neighbors. The wall noise insulation is fair. The floor noise insulation is poor, and that's being charitable. From the 2nd floor, I can both hear and feel my 1st floor neighbors walking around in their living room. They can do the same for me. When the first neighbors complained, I had maintenance come in and fix the creaky boards. Now they just hear footfalls, not creaks and squeaks as well. That's no worse than other wood based floored apartments I've lived in, which is why I picked a 2nd floor apartment! I know the noise from walking varies by unit and by occupant, so you may luck into a very quiet or very noisy place. I did have long running issues with some of my neighbors over noise and loitering, but they were resolved with one couple moving out (due to their noise violations) and the others coming to an understanding after months of working with the rental office. Since the last problem all but one set of neighbors has changed over. I've had no problems other than someone banging doors late at night, and that stopped after the rental office sent around a letter. I feel very comfortable with the current (and past) management, and know if I have a problem in the future it can be resolved peacefully. Heat can be an issue for some. The buildings do have the minimum heat under code. During bitterly cold winter storms your unit can drop down to 65-60 if the winter winds are blowing directly on your outside wall. This usually only happens once a year for me. I did have to raise my curtin hem in the living room, as it was blocking the radiant heat from getting enough air circulation. Once I did that I didn't have any more problems. Honestly, those days are the ones I just bake more, so I don't have to be so cold. I've heard of others saying they can't get their apartment above 68 usually, but my apartment is usually toasty warm throughout the winter (yes, poor floors mean borrowing the downstairs neighbors heat all winter long!) And yes, the complex does have the October-April heating window, but that's quite common in PA. Management did extend the heating season one year when we had a very cold April, so they do pay attention to our needs and adjust the schedule if needed. Decorating your apartment isn't a problem so long as you ask first. The metal mini blinds are great, but curtains do improve the look of the windows. I'm looking forward to painting soon. While I got a free repaint as a third year renewal reward, I'd like some color this time around. The paint used does mark easily and isn't washable except in the kitchen and bathroom. I recommend picking up a bit of touch-up paint if you're rough on your walls. Yes, parking can be a problem but that depends largely on where your unit is. I have no problem parking close to my unit except very late at night. Other units are not so lucky. The parking lot surface is good, and they just put in more drainage pipes. The only problem I've had is with people speeding on their way out or double parking by the mailboxes. Snow removal is good, both in the complex and on the nearby roads. Living next to three schools does have its perks! Neighbors are usually quiet and friendly when digging out after a storm. This is definitely the kind of place that you could borrow a snow shovel or a ride to the corner store from your neighbors. Moving in or out can be a pain since moving trucks can't come onto the grass, so be prepared for a bit of heavy lifting. All in all, the complex feels very safe. I have never been concerned coming home late. There is a community watch program, but I've never seen the need for it. So long as you're not too sensitive to noise you'll probably like it here.
