Resident 2010 - 2013

3/22/2013

I have lived at the WCC for three years now, and every single year it just gets worse and worse. It is convenient because it is already furnished and they have a maintenance staff. Beyond that, living here is a complete nightmare beginning with privacy. Every single year the staff finds some new type of way to enter your apartment more often than the prior year. For instance, this year all of a sudden we were given a "general notice" that next years' residents will be perusing around the apartment. Nope, the staff is not saying what time or even what day. Just that they will be there some time beginning at 9 am. I've even seen staff members simply knock twice and just enter rooms when not answered. Just two of many, many examples seen throughout the years. Yes, it is furnished, but chances are you will basically pay back what you would have spent on furniture solely on fees and fines. Every single year the staff also finds a way to increase rent by a ridiculous percentage. When I first began living here, rent cost me $717 a month for a standard 4 person with a main bedroom and athroom (This is what a majority of the rooms are 4 BR/3 Bath). I now downgraded to a shared bathroom, and next year it would cost me over $800 a month to live there. That is not even including the over $130 that they may you pay up front just to park there in the parking lot that does not even come close to filling up. I actually was towed out of the lot before, despite being a resident. Next, comes the internet situation. This has been an ongoing dilemma for the past two years. When I first moved in, you were able to have your own router, despite the poor "Hotwire" service. A little over a year ago, they decided that it would be "more fair" to institute a building-wide wireless network. Like just about everything the Commons does, they completely skimped out and you are lucky to get 1/5 of the speeds you would see on a normal Comcast or Verizon network. There are constantly issues and neither the staff or Hotwire will address them in the proper manner. Bottom line, I personally would not recommend living here. It is a constant headache aside from school. There are policies instituted and e-mails constantly sent that would make your head spin. There are plenty of other options and other landlords that will respect a student's privacy. Most other residencies would certainly be cheaper, especially if you plan to stay there 2 years or more.
