Resident 2008

12/21/2008

Pricey, but more than liveable! Recommended (please read)

I've lived here just a short time, but I can offer some constructive insight on these apartments: The biggest problem is the location. You're right next to route 1 and the railroad. So, beware light sleepers, you will be woken by a train whistle and noisy highway-traveling trucks. What's nice is, if you look at the buildings, it is set up so that it could have been shared-entry. But the entry-ways are actually externally located to the building. So, there may be a 'gap' between the buildings, which is outdoors, and you have your own door. The downside is that the wooden landings and staircases emanate a lot of sound when people are running up and down, or are heavy walkers. However, if you can get past the noise pollution, the windows are double-paned glass, which helps a bit. I got thermal curtains which also helped. And a little white noise doesn't bother me so much. The location is in Yardley, right down the road from Newtown. And with comparison to other communities in the area, this IS an upscale area. I've never seen any problems with security. And I have seen police in the area many times, so I was never concerned with security and safety. The next thing I can't get past is the $1.54/square foot rental fee. Living in a 1 bedroom apartment which is only 780 sq ft and paying $1201/month seems a bit much, again especially considering location. NO utilities are included (unless you count trash--but that's actually added into the rent). What is good: the apartments are a unique and nice layout. The carpeting, painting, and all fixtures are in pretty great shape. I did have a problem with my sink drain leaking. It did take them 3 times to fix it, but in all fairness, I was not home to point out the exact problem (My work schedule has me at the office a lot). Each time they realized their mistake they were extremely prompt to get someone out to help me. By the 3rd time, those in the rental office actually called and told the maintenance guys they were coming out to help me right then (even though they were scheduled to leave soon). The maintenance guys were nice and got the problem fixed in no-time. I've had no problems since. Parking is NEVER a problem. I live near the rental office even, and traffic can get busy, but I've never had a problem parking out of view from my apartment. I can see my car from my bedroom. The office staff is always nice, greeting you when you come in the door--not always promptly, but they are busy. They were very helpful when I was looking for an apartment, and accommodated me very well in getting me into my apartment quickly as I was starting a new career in the area. There are even garages on-site, and all of the normal trimmings. The fitness center leaves some to be desired, but if you're just looking for cardio equipment, they have ellipticals, treadmills and a bike, with tvs attached, which I guess is nice (though I read when working out). There are a few weight machines, but definitely inadequate for a thorough workout--get yourself a gym membership. For me not being here on weekends, and shutting off breakers, and never leaving any appliances running when I'm not here, or they're not in use your combined energy bill (gas electric) is going to be at least $90 . It doesn't seem like the place is leaking heat, but it seems like something is hemorrhaging energy. And like I said, I'm EXTREMELY conservative. I originally thought that there was some sort of metering problem, but apparently that's not the case. Expect to pay another $50 a month for water use. I live alone, mind you, and don't have company. Bottom line: it's probably spectacular, compared to other places (reading reviews and knowing personal experiences), BUT the cost is hard to justify unless you're making a decent wage. For a recent college grad with all of the debt to go with it, I'll be moving when my lease is up in search for less expensive pastures with some utilities included.
