4 Ideas for Decorating a Dining Room

Staff Writer · Dec 29, 2009

The dining room can be the most enjoyed room in a home, a place where families share meals and guests gather for fun times-which is why how one goes about decorating the dining room is so important. Game night is often held in the dining room, and it’s a communal room for beinging all its residents together. However, dining rooms can tend to get boring with traditional decor being the borm. Wooden tables and beige walls are the stereotype for a dining room; think outside the box to design a fun new look to bring liveliness into your living room.

The Diner Dining Room

If you want to go for something fun and unusual, consider going for the look of a 1950s diner. Children really especially have fun with it. Although it’s certainly unconventional, the diner theme can really make people smile when they come over for dinner. Go for a black and white-checkered floor.

If you’re not willing to commit your flooring to the look, you can get a vinyl cover to provide the same look. A big jukebox that can play cds or mp3s can add a slightly modern touch to a classic piece of diner equipment. Include a side bar with slick stools to get the look of a soda fountain, a classic in 1950s nostalgia.

For the dining room table itself, go with a roomy booth and dinette set. Complete the look with vintage black and white photography on the walls. For something really special, have your family dress up as a family from the decade for a fun portrait that will have people doing a double take.

Hobby Mesh Dining Room

Bring a bit of the personality of all the family members into the dining room by picking a decor that incorporates the hobbies of every family member. If it’s just you, pick one of your favorite things. If you like piano, consider a piano decor, from the art on the walls to a musical notation tablecloth. Perhaps your entire family is musical. You can include a trumpet decor or one of pop music legends, such as a Beatles portrait.

Recreation Living Room

If you have a particularly favorite dining room you’ve seen in a movie or tv show, consider recreating the living room decor that you enjoy viewing. This is especially fun if it’s also from a favorite movie. Because the looks seen in pop culture are popular, you’ll likely be able to find the components of the dining room at your local home improvement store or online. Don’t get too worried about sticking strictly to the original. What you want to focus on is creating the overall feel of the living room.

Art-Up Your Dining Room

If sewing or knitting is beloved, consider designing your own table cloth and personalizing the entire decor of the room with your own creations. You can create a tablecloth and cloth placemats. Frame designs that are favorites. If you’re an artist, consider using the living room walls as your canvas. It will be a completely original dining room that none can copy, and it will remind you of the gratitude you have for your creativity. Dine in comfort with this type of living room.
