4 Questions to Ask When Mattress Shopping

Staff Writer · Mar 26, 2010

Mattress shopping is not as straightforward as you may think. New technologies have been invented, broadening your choices for the perfect mattress that fits your budget. Your bed may be the most-used furniture in your apartment, and it’s important that your mattress is comfortable. Tossing and turning at night due to a mattress that’s a wrong fit leads to sleep deprivation and irritability. Over time, it will have a negative impact on your health. Ask 4 key questions when mattress shopping to make sure this doesn’t happen to you.

1 – What Measurements Do They Use to Determine Different Sizes?

Life would be easy when mattress shopping if there was uniformity among manufacturers for all the different sizes: king, queen, double, full and twin. Unfortunately, that’s not the case, and you should research the specific dimensions of each mattress that you’re considering. Ask them the measurements of the size you need and compare it to your box spring or bed frame. Find one that is as close to an exact fit as possible. You’ll find that making your bed, as well as getting in and out of bed, is much easier with a mattress that fits just right.

2 – Can I Lie on Your Memory Foam Mattress?

Don’t purchase a memory foam mattress online until you have a chance to lay down on the particular brand you’re considering. Mattress shopping should only be done online once you’ve had the experience of touching and feeling the mattress at a store or trade show. Every foam mattress feels different, and if it’s your first experience with one, you’ll have to determine whether you like the way it feels. It’s very different from sleeping on a typical mattress with springs, and it’s not for everyone.

3 – Is the Mattress Comfortable?

The primary reason for replacing your mattress is for comfort. Sleeping on an older mattress can hurt your body and your spine. It makes for sleepless nights, and can affect job or school performance. No matter what technology you prefer, you have to find a mattress that’s comfortable. When you lay on a mattress at the store, ask yourself “Is this mattress comfortable?” The most expensive brand may not be the best if it’s not relaxing or something you’re not used to. Don’t be shy to lay there for five minutes or so in different positions to really get a feel as to whether the mattress will work for you.

4 – What Is the Coil Count in the Mattress?

Understanding the different features when mattress shopping is important. One feature to pay attention to for certain types of mattresses is the coil count. The range is often between three hundred and seven hundred coils. The more coils a mattress has, the more support you’ll get for your back and body. Ask the store representative or research the manufacturer’s product details to find out the coil count.

Asking these questions while mattress shopping will help you find one that will give you the most comfort and support.
