4 Simple Tips to Improve Apartment Security

Staff Writer · Oct 27, 2009

You can take simple steps to improve apartment security for yourself and your neighbors. The results are increased protection for you and your family, and peace of mind. If you’re wondering what more you can do to make sure your apartment is secured, consider these tips:

1. Be Alert

It’s important to be alert to your surroundings. You should take note if you see strange vehicles on the premises. Don’t just ignore it. Hopefully it’s just your neighbor’s guests, but in the worst case scenario, it could be a criminal scouting apartments. Keep an eye out to see what is happening, so that you can be prepared to defend yourself or call for help. You can also ask your neighbors if they’ve noticed the car to find out what they know. Encourage them to keep an eye out as well.

2. Don’t Let Others In

One benefit of living in a gated community is that you can prevent access to criminals. You destroy this benefit if you let cars follow you in. You also put your neighbors at risk of criminal activity. If you live in an apartment dwelling with a gate for security purposes, you have an explicit duty to protect those around you by making sure that you’re the only one driving on the premises. If a car is tailing you on the way in, try to find a way to drive at a speed that will have the gate close before they can get in. If you suspect criminal activity, notify apartment security or call for help.

3. Lock Your Doors

It doesn’t matter if you live in an urban area or rural community, you still need to lock your doors. You don’t want to give a criminal easy access into your apartment. You’ll also have less time to react to any danger because there’s no barrier between you and them. In addition to locked doors, you need to install deadbolts. This makes it harder for someone to kick in your door. Again, this buys you time to react and respond to the danger in front of you.

4. Install a Security System

One way to help prevent an attack in the first place is to install your own security system. This can be an alarm system that notifies police and fire departments about any breach in your apartment. It can detect someone trying to come through your doors and windows. Many also come with smoke and fire detectors, and can detect fires in your apartment or very close by. Once the system detects a fire, it will notify the fire department. The alarm and detectors can be life-savers when you need help but can’t get to a phone, or have been hurt. It will also send the necessary help when you’re away from your apartment.

Don’t wait any longer to take the steps necessary to improve apartment security. It will help to protect you and help you live more peacefully in your apartment.
