5 Apartment Necessities for the Tech Savvy

Staff Writer · Oct 1, 2010

You’re not going to enjoy your apartment, or get much use out it, if you’re tech savvy and it’s not. When searching for apartments, you should have a list of apartment necessities handy and choose apartments that best meet your technology needs. Some things to include on your list are:

Necessity #1 – Wireless Internet Access

Some apartments only have broadband access, and there a few apartments left where you can only access the Internet using dial-up. You’re going to be frustrated with either of those options if you want the freedom to move around your apartment with your laptop to do your work, social networking or other online activities.

Apartment communities make it a point to include wireless Internet access in their advertisements to attract tech savvy tenants like you, so look for those. You can also just ask the landlord whether wireless Internet is included.

Necessity # 2 – Alarm System

You’re going to need to protect all of your technology from thieves, and an apartment that already has an alarm system installed can help.  You don’t have to worry about negotiating with your landlord to install one, or obtain permission to get it done yourself if it comes with the apartment. Alarms can be helpful to deter theft, and you’ll want to prevent it as much as possible, even if you have renters insurance.

Necessity # 3 – Keyless Entry System

When you’re dedicated to living a tech savvy life, you’ll find ways to integrate technology in just about everything, and that includes how you enter your apartment. Some apartments have a keyless entry system as an alternative to keys.  You may have to spend a little more for it, but it is more convenient.

Necessity # 4 – Multiple Phone Lines

Having access to just one phone line can slow  you down, especially if you have roommates, run a business from your apartment, or are stuck with dial-up Internet access only. If you try to get the phone company to install additional phone lines, you could end up with a bill amounting to hundreds of dollars just for installation costs. The phone company might also require a deposit for each phone line.

In addition to that, the landlord may not give you or the phone company permission to install additional lines. You can avoid that problem if you find an apartment that has already has multiple phone lines included.

Necessity # 5 – Hi-End Entertainment System

If you’re looking for a furnished or luxury apartment, then access to a hi-end entertainment system may be right for you. Some apartments have in-wall speaker systems that can make your living room sound like you’re in a movie theater. Others include HD-TV as part of the amenities offered to tenants “for free.” When you’re going to pay more for an apartment, you should consider this option.

Once you’re got the necessities covered, you can build a tech savvy environment and add more to it over time. It’s much harder and more costly to try to do it from scratch, without access to some basic apartment necessities.
