5 Benefits of Rugs in a College Apartment

Staff Writer · Aug 19, 2010

Choosing floor coverings for a shared college apartment is often part of the checklist for outfitting a housing space at the time of move in. When it comes to looking for good flooring options for a college apartment that might get a lot of traffic during the year, area rugs are a top choice and can help a group of young scholars better manage their new collective home. Here are some of the reasons that students go shopping for these versatile floor covers when they are setting up their new living space.

1. Protecting Floors

Rugs are extremely effective in protecting hard wood floors from all of the dangers that they face in a busy shared living space. Moving furniture around can damage hardwood surfaces, as can any sharp objects tracked in by residents. If one of your roommates has a big dog, that’s another reason to cover up floors with affordable area rugs. The same goes for carpets, where using a cheap rug can help students avoid excessive charges for damages when they move out at the end of the semester or year. Without good floor protection, the irate landlord might just decide to keep the entire security deposit, or even add additional charges as per a specialized student lease that will end up adding even more to those maxed-out credit cards.

2. Easy to Clean

Lots of college students don’t have access to all of those neat gadgets that homemakers use to keep their floors in squeaky clean conditions. Unlike carpets, which generally need a vacuum cleaner, rugs can be a lot easier to clean. There’s no technology needed: just drag the thing outside, hang it on something, and get the biggest kid to take a few whacks at it, and most of the accumulated debris will shake off.

3. Sound Reduction

This tip is especially important for student apartments where someone is practicing for a rock group, in the marching band, or just into loud music. Rugs help with reducing the amount of sound that echoes through the living space, allowing others a better chance to actually crack those books.

4. Safety

This may not be a terribly important issue, unless one of your roommates frequently invites their little relatives over, but another benefit of rugs is that they create a more stable surface for walking. That means it’s less likely that someone will trip in their socks, go sprawling on the ground, and possibly injure themselves.

5. Aesthetics

Rugs also help floors to look better, especially if the original floor is stained, gouged, or otherwise disfigured. Plus, a good rug can really ?otie the room together as a true interior design expert once famously remarked.

All of these are pretty good reasons to consider buying some affordable area rugs at the very beginning of the school year when college students move in together.
