5 Common 30th Birthday Party Themes to Consider

Staff Writer · Oct 21, 2010

When it comes to 30th birthday party themes, there are few that can’t be executed from the comfort of your own apartment. An apartment can be a great place to throw a party. It’s often underestimated in favor of larger houses, but working with the space confines of an apartment just brings everyone that much closer together. Also, it brings out more creativity in you as you make choices to have the best party possible in your apartment home. One’s 30th birthday marks an absolute milestone in life, so you want to be sure to throw a big party for the occasion.

1. 29 + 1 (And More Fun)

Many women joke that, on any birthday after 29, they are imply 29 “and counting.” Make a party themed around this gag. There are lots of 29 cards that can double as decorations. When decorating, be sure to make the apartment space as roomy as possible by perhaps even taking some furniture from the main room and placing it in the back room for the party. For the cake itself, have candles in the numbers “29” and “1” Be sure to add the plus sign, too, or you may also opt to write it out, along with the 30th birthday girl’s (or guy’s) name.

2. Over the Hill

Although it’s obviously a much exaggerated gag for such a truly young birthday as 30, poke fun at the stress many have upon turning 30 by acting as though the birthday party recipient is truly an old person. Almost any party store and even shops like Target will have what you need to decorate for the party. Let the guests in on the gag, so that all the guests can choose theme-appropriate cards. Although the wrapping on presents should match the theme, be sure to get the birthday party recipient great gifts to offset the slight sting of such a humorous party.

3. Back in Time Party

Celebrate the milestone 30th birthday by throwing a party that is themed to the year the birthday guy or girl was born, making it a party celebrating what happened 30 years ago. Make a mix to play at the party full of songs that were released in the year. Decorate the apartment with a vintage calendar, banner of the year, and other retro things. If you want to really go all out, scroll eBay or vintage shops for things of the time period, taking your guests through an experience back in time. It’s a sweet, fun party idea, and it’s easily adaptable to even smaller apartment spaces.

4. 30 Reasons to Love You

Although it could get a bit sappy, have a truly sweet birthday party by celebrating 30 reasons that you love the birthday girl or guy. This is usually a theme when the party is hosted by the significant other of the one turning 30. Some friends may opt to spoof the birthday recipient by exaggerating on the reasons that he loves him. Decorate the apartment in “Valentine’s Day” type decorations, showcasing the love.

5. Three Scores

A party which celebrates all three decades that the person turning 30 has lived through can be a lot of fun for guests. You can divide your guest list into three, assigning each group with a different time period from which they should dress up as. A costume party that includes all the time periods someone has live through is really popular and fun. Decorations should be varied for all three decades, too. Among 30th birthday theme ideas, it’s one of the most fun and most open to interpretation of the party host.
