5 Places to Buy Moving Boxes

Staff Writer · Oct 27, 2009

When you’re planning a move, you need to buy moving boxes. Cardboard boxes are one of the best things to buy because they’re easy to ship or transport in a truck. If you’re wondering where to buy some, check out these 5 places:

1. Supermarkets

The next time to go to buy groceries, check out the office supplies in the stationery department. Your supermarket wants to compete with WalMart and the office supply stores, and therefore, they sell cardboard boxes and moving supplies. This might be a good option if you receive rewards or points on your store card. These points usually result in a discount on fuel or additional prepaid cell phone minutes. It’s worth seeing whether a slightly higher cost of boxes at your grocery store is a better deal because of the fuel or cell phone benefits.

2. Office Supply Stores

Any of the major office supply stores carry moving boxes. They’ll usually have various shapes and sizes geared towards business owners who need boxes for moving and for storage. Some of the boxes will also be heavy duty, which will come in handy for your fragile items, like dishes and glassware. Take the time to compare prices before you buy.

3. DIY Moving Companies

The place where you to go to rent a moving truck may also have boxes for sale. Bigger companies such as Uhaul will have them for sale right where you go to pick up the truck, or you can order from them online. They will have everything you need for moving because that’s their business. It’s worth browsing the options if you’re going to rent a truck or if you want to research what you need. They’ll have moving supplies that you may not have thought of. This is convenient for last minute shoppers, but it’s not the most economical option. If you’ve got time on your hands, you should compare prices online and offline for better deals.

4. Online Dealers

There are many online stores that specialize in selling new and used boxes. Some are Boxqeust or UsedCardBoxes. These companies offer kits depending on how many rooms you’re moving, or you can buy an assortment of packing boxes based on your needs. Many will even offer free shipping as an incentive to buy from them. In addition to the boxes, these companies sell moving supplies, offering you the opportunity to do all of you shopping at once.

5. Craigslist

You can buy moving boxes from others who have just moved on Craigslist. Many times they’re in good condition and cheaper than all of the other options mentioned above. Many people also offer their boxes for free on Craigslist. If you look everyday, you might get a combination of free and for sale boxes that will make buying your moving supplies very affordable.

The key to buying moving boxes is to take your time and research the best prices in advance. Otherwise, you may end up buying boxes at premium prices.
