Let the sun shine in! It’s the middle of summer, the weather is gorgeous and you want to bring some of that pleasant warmth into your apartment. Use these tips to keep your place sunny for when the grey cold winter takes charge.

Beach Inspiration

Nothing says summer like a visit to the beach. Leave the sand there, but bring home (or simply buy) some shells. Filling a hurricane glass with shells makes for a fresh statement on a shelf or side table. If you can get your hands on big ones, use them as book ends. Coral can be used in similar ways. The crafty types can buy smaller shells and armed with their glue gun decorate a picture frame, mirror, lamp (base or shade) or create a nice looking bulletin board. Craft stores have shells of all types and sizes to buy, so you don’t have to come within 100 yards of an actual beach to use this tip.

Stimulate with Slip Covers

There’s something that just sounds granny-like about slip covers, but really, they are the quickest and easiest, not to mention the cheapest way to update your apartment’s look. And we get to hang on to our favorite old comfy chair! Take a look at your dining table’s chairs. Changing the cushions will give the table an instant boost. Keep with your current color hue, but choose something with an edgy pattern – bold geometric shapes are often fun.

Have a Seat

Do you have room for a new chair or can an old one be tossed? Bring a beach chair inside. Look for either a comfy wicker chair that can be enlivened with a colorful summer cushion, or choose an always popular Adirondack chair. To really go beachy, pick up a wooden canvas sling back chair. Focus on comfort; you don’t want this to be a look-only seat.

Splash in the Bath

If the decorating bug bites but you don’t have the time, energy or money to do something major, head to the bathroom. If you are lucky enough to have a shower curtain instead of glass doors, it’s easy to infuse a bit of summer. Choose a curtain with summer flowers (gerbera daisies, dahlias) in bright colors like pink or turquoise. Or install a beach fantasy – how about a beautiful ocean sunset scene?

Go Floral

Keep an eye on your local farmers’ market or grocery store’s floral section for what flowers are on sale. Typically it will be whatever is in season. Every week pick up a fresh bunch. Choose a vase that says ‘vacation’ to you and put it in a spot close to the entry way of your apartment. Every time you walk through the door you’ll get a little lift from the bouquet.
