Apartment Accessory Storage

With the effortless ability that most renters have to accumulate junk, we are often forced to come up with creative ways to store our accessories. Here are a few ideas to maximize your storage options and still be able to find what you need in a pinch.

Winter is right around the corner, and you may be looking for somewhere to stash all of your cold weather gear. Hats and gloves can be stored in baskets or plastic drawers that can be placed in your hallway (if you have one) or by the front door for quick access on your way out in the morning. You might also consider hanging a large canvas bag from a hook to stash accessories as well. Scarves can be placed in baskets or hung from hooks. If you have room in your closet, you can also try displaying your scarves on a few hangers to maximize your space. This also works with belts which can be looped through sturdy hangers. Baseball caps or sun hats can hang from coat hooks or even stored in baskets stacked on top of one another.

If you have a lot of cologne or perfume bottles, take the top of a decorative shoebox lid (or get crafty and decorate one yourself) and flip it over – you will find that you can fit a lot of bottles on this makeshift cardboard tray without taking up too much space. This also works for nail polish, which will fit nicely into any large box with a lid or even a large cosmetics bag.

For the ladies, make-up and jewelry are two things that can often take up a lot of space and may be difficult to organize. Look for an ornamental set of hooks at any crafts store – you can mount these on your wall and use for hanging your necklaces or bracelets. Another item you can find at a crafts store is a jewelry tree – these pieces are often shaped to look like ornamental trees and can be used for hanging bracelets or other jewelry, resulting in both a display piece and a space saver for your dresser. Canisters or jars can be used as containers for your eyeliners or lipsticks. Corkboards are a nice way to display and store all of your earrings, no matter how large or small.

Purses or shoulder bags can tend to be a bit bulky and therefore harder to store. If you do not have the space to hang these up, consider purchasing cubby hole organizers – these can work for shoes, purses and anything else that might be larger and difficult to easily stow. Small coin or change purses often have loops that will hang on hooks or can be stored in small baskets as well.

Headphones and chargers needed for various forms of technology are another thing we often find ourselves tripping over. A tiny decorative bowl or dish can be used to house these items or a set of small plastic drawers will easily fit a lot of these cords and cables and can also be accessed quickly.

Finding functional and decorative ways to store your items isn’t always easy, but these tips should get you off to a good start. Happy organizing!
