Apartment Decorating: Converting a Second Bedroom into a Nursery

Staff Writer · Jan 9, 2010

Using a second bedroom as a nursery is a great way to employ apartment decorating for the addition of a child. Rather than seeking to rent a newer and larger apartment, most couples find that they can do well to recondition and restyle an existing bedroom for use as a nursery.

The most important part of apartment decorating of a nursery is to keep the budget in check by not spending excessively and keeping designs simple rather than extravagant. By doing this, a second bedroom can be converted into a nursery relatively easily.

Choose a Color Scheme

The first thing that should be done when decorating a nursery is choosing a color scheme. When parents are unsure of the sex of a baby, it is always better to rely on neutral gender tones rather than loud and audacious colors. Colors that fit this bill include yellow, taupe, ivory, green and beige. Sticking to neutral colors can help to provide brighten up the nursery, as well as keep the design on an even keel.

Try choosing a color and comparing it to the style and layout of the room. If there are only a few windows in the nursery and the room is quaintly small, it may be better to choose a color, such as yellow, that will brighten up the room when the sunlight hits it-making the room appear as though it has more space than is actually available.

Choose a Design Theme

After a color scheme has been chosen that will best suit the apartment decorating of a nursery, the next step is to determine what type of design scheme will best compliment the room. A design scheme can include a child-like character, such as Winnie the Pooh and Mickey Mouse, or it can be more contemporary oriented, like stripes, dots and circles. The important thing to remember when choosing a design scheme is that it should match the color scheme that has been chosen for the room.

Using Leftover Furniture in the Nursery

The next thing to do when converting a second bedroom into a nursery is to consider what furniture from the bedroom can be salvaged and used in the nursery. While it is certainly likely that a crib or changing table will have to be purchased, there may be other pieces of furniture, such as a dresser or recliner, which can fit quite nicely into the context of a nursery.

Using existing furniture in the nursery is a great way to save money when converting a second bedroom into a nursery. The expenditure of purchasing new furniture for a nursery can quickly add up to anywhere from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. In order to keep the budget and finances in check, be sure to save any of the furniture or lighting that can be used in a nursery.
